Tigers settle for draw after strong start vs. Moorhead

MARSHALL — A trio of first-half goals weren’t enough cushion for the Marshall boys soccer team when they hosted Class 3A Moorhead on Friday night. The Tigers led by as many as three goals and led as late as the 74th minute, but settled for a 4-4 draw in the end.
“We thought we had it. We’re at home, we played well, we just didn’t have our depth,” Marshall head coach Tony Correa said, adding that several of the team’s players got hurt in Thursday’s 2-1 win over Worthington, the program’s first-ever road win over the Trojans. “I thought we did well as far as we could. Our subs held in there, that last goal, the own goal, nothing you can do about that.”
Jared Hernandez put the Tigers on the board in the 13th minute with a ground-through ball that glanced off the Moorhead goalie’s fingertips into the back of the net. Eight minutes later, Isaiah Argueta sailed in a shot from about 25 yards out to double the lead.
Hernandez took another deep shot in the 31st minute, forcing the Moorhead goalie to dive for the save.
While the keeper deflected the ball, he wasn’t able to regroup in time to gather it and Sabino Us made the play but recovered the rebound and chipped it in to make the score 3-0 at halftime.
The wheels started to fall off the wagon early in the second half. They broke through with their first goal in the 43rd minute and scored another two in the next 10 minutes to quickly tie up the match.
“We just felt the physical fatigue and we kind of started giving up on plays,” Correa said. “I think that they came back deserving the tie, and I’m happy with the tie.
We definitely didn’t deserve to lose, but we made mistakes.”
As time winded down, the prospects of a draw became increasingly probable. That is, until Marshall drew a foul in the box in the 69th minute. Isaiah Argueta had called for the opportunity to take a free kick earlier in the game and this time he got the opportunity to take it from the penalty spot. He drilled the ball into the right side of the net to give Marshall a 4-3 lead with just 11 minutes left to play.
Yet, the Tigers’ elation was short-lived. Five minutes later, Marshall committed a penalty just outside the box to set up the Spuds with a free kick. The ball was deflected mid-air and Marshall goalkeeper Roberto Garcia Lopez had no time to react as the equalizer found the back of the net. Garcia Lopez finished the night with six saves in goal.
Marshall had a last-minute opportunity facing a one-on-one with the keeper, but the ball was deflected by the goalkeeper, took a bounce along the goal line and went out. Marshall was awarded a corner kick with 25 seconds to play but Moorhead cleared the ball and forced Marshall to settle for the tie.
“Just be happy that we were contending and winning for most of the game,” Correa said when asked what he wanted his team to take away from the effort. “This team’s tough. They play opponents that are all good opponents and we haven’t really seen that as often, so I’m just happy that they came down.”
Marshall’s record shifts to 8-2-1 after the draw. Marshall will play again on Monday when they go on the road to face St. Peter. The game, which was originally scheduled to be played on Aug. 29, will start at 7 p.m. on Monday.
