Power outage affects 1,000 customers in Marshall
MMU replaces failed switch
MARSHALL — A power outage early Tuesday morning affected about 1,000 customers on the east side of Marshall.
Marshall Municipal Utilities said the outage was caused by the failure of a main distribution feeder switch near East Lyon Street and Jewett Street.
MMU electrical workers were able to restore power to customers by around 5 a.m., according to MMU.
“We had crew members dispatched right away,” said Tony Mead, electric operations manager at MMU.
Mead said the utility received the first reports of the power outage around 3:20 a.m. Tuesday. MMU workers were able to locate the failed distribution feeder switch, and reroute power to customers by using other distribution feeders.
“We are fortunate that we’ve got on-call staff,” he said.
Mead said the distribution feeder switch worked in a similar way to a main breaker in a residence, but on a larger scale and handling a much higher voltage of electricity. MMU has hundreds of switches in its system, he said.
There was no evidence of what caused Tuesday’s switch failure, Mead said. Crew members were able to replace the damaged switch, and the system was fully re-energized by about 8 a.m.
The power outage was MMU’s second in less than a year, with a previous outage reported in August 2025. Overall, power outages have been rare in Marshall, Mead said.
