MARSHALL — Jake Eben fired a complete-game two-hitter Wednesday night as the Marshall A’s defeated the Dawson Drakes 9-2 in a non-conference game at Legion Field.
Eben overcame a rough third inning and was in control afterwards in taking the victory. He walked 5 and struck out 3 during the game. One Dawson run was earned.
“He struggled a little bit early but then found it and after that, and it was a complete 180,” Said Marshall Manager Zach Olson, who celebrated his birthday with the victory.
Dawson plated one of its two runs in the top of the third when Beau Johnson started the inning with one of the two Dawson hits and moved around the bases thanks to a wild pitch, a couple of walks and a sacrifice fly by Kam Sather.
That would prove to be it for the Drakes until the ninth, when they scored one more.
Two big four-run innings propelled the A’s on the night. The winners scored four runs in the second and eighth innings, and a single run in the third.
In the second, the A’s sent 10 batters to the plate. Designated hitter Wes Sarsland drew a walk and came across later thanks to an RBI walk by Braxton Koster. Also scoring were Liam Kruse, Tyler Wichmann and Koster. Marshall drew four walks in the inning and had four hits. They left the bases full in the inning, and had a total of 10 left-on-base in the game.
Marshall would get four more in the eighth. Dawson pitchers struggled with control issues and the Drakes used four hurlers during the contest. Starter Blake Thompson took the loss.
The A’s had 10 hits in the game, led by three from shortstop Tyler Wichmann, one of which was a home run. Liam Kruse and Ryan Schwagel had two apiece. Other hits were by Cody Wichmann, Koster and AJ Toulouse.
Kam Sather had the other hit for Dawson, now 1-10.
“I thought we had good approaches at the plate,” said Olson. “We were able to take advantage of mistakes. We were also patient. There’s a big difference between patience and pressing.”
The 7-9 A’s are off until the July 8, when they host Wabasso at 7:30 p.m.
