MARSHALL — Bird Island pitcher Casey Lewandowski shut down the Marshall A’s hitters Sunday night in the Bullfrogs’ 9-1 Corn Belt League victory at Legion Field.

Lewandowski was in control throughout and held the A’s to two hits during his seven innings of work. Jesse Bjur and Zeke Walton pitched an inning each to finish up.

Marshall falls to 6-9 on the season.

“They have had a core group of about six guys over the past few years and they’re a good team,” said Marshall manager Zach Olson.

It was the second time the A’s have fallen to Bird Island. They lost 7-5 earlier in the year.

Inning-extending errors told the story Sunday night. Marshall committed three errors, all in the first three innings. The Bullfrogs pushed across six runs in the third inning on four hits and two errors, with all the runs coming with two outs.

Catcher Ryan Schwagel scored Marshall’s lone run in the fifth inning. He walked, advanced on an error and scored on an infield out by Logan Tomasek.

“That’s baseball, you just never know,” said Olson after the game.

The Marshall manager wasn’t too happy with his team’s play.

“We were sloppy, especially early, and l don’t think the effort was there,” he said. “They are easily one of the two top teams in the league and it was an opportunity to make a statement.”

Marshall’s first hit came in the fourth inning. Liam Kruse and Cooper Mensink had the two hits for Marshall, which left six on base.

Cody Wichmann started on the mound for the A’s and and went three innings, allowing seven hits and eight runs, only two of those earned. Logan Terfehr pitched three innings, and Kruse the final three innings.

Bird Island had a total of 11 hits and just three earned runs.
