MARSHALL — The Marshall Yellow VFW U15 baseball team used a big inning in each game to take a 9-2 and 9-5 doubleheader sweep over Fargo in baseball action at Legion Field Thursday.
Head coach Charlie Jacobson said he was pleased to see the U15 Orange team improve its record to 15-2 on the season, but cautioned there were areas of the game that could use some work.
“Some fielding issues, base-running mistakes — little things like that that we’ll work on,” he said.
Graem Bly was in control on the mound in the first game, going 6 2/3 innings before giving way to Jaden Lyons with one out in the seventh. Bly was around the strike zone all day and kept the Fargo batters off balance with a quick fast ball and an effective curve that he was able to throw for strikes.
“Graem pitched really well for us,” said Jacobson. “He was sharp, and he proved today what he’s got.”
A six-run fourth inning blew it open for VFW Orange. The winners strung together five hits and benefited from a Fargo error. The big blow was a 3-RBI, bases clearing triple by Max Weedman, which plated Magnus Schlenner, Bennett Kimman and Matt Ryks. All three singled that inning. Weedman would later score on a Mauer Leysen ground-out to the right side. Also scoring were Kaden Boeck and Kyper Brownlee, who reached on a walk and single, respectively.
Kimman led the nine-hit Marshall attack with three. Weedman had two hits and Schlenner, Cale Erickson, Brownlee and Ryks, one apiece. Weedman had three RBIs, Schlenner and Kimman, two each and Kaden Boeck and Mauer Leysen, one apiece.
Bly gave up just one hit, struck out eight and walked three. Orange committed five errors.
GAME 2
It’s hard to believe Marshall Orange’s scored three runs on zero hits, but such was the case in the fourth inning of the 9-5 second-game win.
“You just don’t see that,” said Jacobson of the anomaly. Five consecutive walks by Fargo starting pitcher Matt Horny opened the gates for the inning, Marshall scored three runs on 0 hits and 0 errors.
The teams were tied at 5-5 heading into the bottom of the 6th inning. Orange plated four in that inning and that was the difference. Fargo scored two runs in the top of the sixth frame.
Marshall scored nine runs on just six hits. Erickson led the way with two hits. Erickson and Brownlee had two RBIs apiece.
Marshall left 10 base runners stranded.
Weedman started on the mound and went five innings, and Schlenner and Rykes pitched an inning apiece. Orange pitchers walked seven Fargo batters.
