WILLMAR — Owen Renslow scored a hat trick to help bring the Marshall boys’ hockey team back from a 3-1 first-period deficit for an 8-4 road win over Willmar Tuesday night.

Renslow scored two goals in the second period, including one in the final four minutes of the period to give the Tigers their first lead of the game, 4-3.

In the third period, Renslow scored the team’s seventh goal and assisted on the fifth and eighth, giving him a total of five points on the night.

Chase Mellenthin put the Tigers on the board in the first period with a short-handed goal. The Tigers trailed 1-0 when Joey Fossum was handed a two-minute minor for roughing. Despite a five-on-four situation, he was able to score an unassisted goal to tie the game at 1-all.

Fossum didn’t score himself, but was able to get his teammates set up for opportunities all night. He finished the game with a team-high four assists.

Willmar tied the game less than a minute into the third period, but Marshall did not take long to respond. Tyler Welsh put the Tigers up 5-4 off an assist from Jacob Johnson and Sam Schwarz. The Tigers didn’t look back from there.

Jacob Johnson finished the game with two assists while Sam Schwarz also contributed a goal to tie the game at 3-3 in the second period.

After being held to just three shots on goal in the first period, Marshall outshot the Cardinals in each of the next two frames, including a 17-5 margin in favor of the Tigers in the final period.

Gavin Welsh manned the net for the Tigers and finished the game with 28 saves.

The win marks the Tigers’ second in a row after a 6-1 win over Redwood Valley on Monday, Dec. 8.

Marshall (2-5) will try to keep their momentum going when they host Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
