Marshall sends six individuals, relay team to state track meet

ST. PETER — The Marshall track and field team qualified six individuals and a relay team for the state track and field championships at Friday’s Section 2AA championships at Gustavus Adolphus College. The Tigers will now be represented in 10 different events at this weekend’s Class AA state meet.

Marshall finished sixth out of 12 teams on both the girls and boys sides of the meet, the boys team earning 75 points and the girls finishing with 60.5. Mankato West won the boys meet with 207 points, followed by Belle Plaine’s 123 and Jordan’s 90.5, and St. Peter topped the girls field with 200 points while Mankato West and Jordan rounded out the podium at 168 and 118, respectively.

The Marshall boys team had a trio of athletes qualify for state in two events. Aidan Schuerman was the section runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.75 and the 300-meter hurdles at 38.30. Sam Deutz also took second in the 1600 meters at 4:28.47 and the 3200 meters at 9:27.92.

Colton Lindquist also earned a pair of state qualifications in the triple jump and long jump. He placed third in the triple jump at 43-0.5 and fourth in the long jump at 21-2.5.

Both Schuerman and Deutz have past state meet experience, while Lindquist’s berth is his first.

On the girls side, Taleigha Bigler, Katelyn Leibfried and Autumn Deutz will all be returning to state after winning medals in past seasons. Deutz was the Tigers’ only individual section champ, winning the pole vault with a height of 11-07. Bigler and Leibfried were each runners-up in their respective events, Bigler in the 800 at 2:15.39 and Leibfried in the 3200 at 11:22.69.

Marshall’s advancing athletes return to action at the Class AA state meet at St. Michael-Albertville High School later this week. The Class AA preliminaries will be held on Friday starting at 9 a.m, with the finals for the 3200 meters kicking off the meet, and the finals for the remainder of the events will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m.
