NEW ULM — Eli Weedman played the hero for the top-seeded Marshall Tigers in their Section 2AAA baseball tournament quarterfinal matchup against No. 4 New Ulm, Saturday at Johnson Park. The Tigers trailed heading into the sixth and were tied heading into the seventh, but they came out on top with a 5-4 walk-off win.
Knotted up at four runs apiece, Noah Pieper hit a leadoff single and, after a New Ulm pitching change, Chase Alcorn was intentionally walked to put the winning run in scoring position. The Eagles retired consecutive Marshall batters, putting runners on the corners with two outs, and Weedman stepped up with a line-drive single into left field to score Pieper for the win.
Eli Alcorn pitched the first 5 2/3 innings of the win for Marshall, giving up three earned runs on eight hits and a pair of walks with four strikeouts in a no-decision. Noah Frazee retired the lone batter he faced to escape the sixth, and Pieper threw a no hit seventh inning while walking a pair of batters to earn the win.
Chase Alcorn scored the game’s first run when he drew a walk, stole second and scored on a Jackson Sirovy single in the fourth. Yet, New Ulm strung together three hits in the fifth to score three runs, and an Owen Castleman homer in the sixth gave the Eagles a commanding 4-1 lead.
Yet, Marshall didn’t blink at the deficit. Sirovy led off the bottom of the frame with a double before scoring on an Eli Weedman sacrifice fly. With two outs, singles by Andrew Lee and Andrew Stelter put the tying runs on base, and both runners scored when Levi Maeyaert reached on an error.
Sirovy and Pieper led the Tigers at the plate with two hits each, including a double for Sirovy and a walk for Pieper. Chase Alcorn also logged a single, two walks and two stolen bases.
Marshall improves to 20-5 and takes on No. 2 Mankato West in the section semifinals at Johnson Park on Tuesday at 5 p.m. With a win, the Tigers would advance to the section final and take on the elimination bracket winner on Thursday at 5 p.m., needing to win just one out of two games.
With a loss, the Tigers would take on either Mankato East or New Ulm in the elimination bracket final on Tuesday at 7 p.m., needing to win that game and then beat Mankato West twice in a row in order to advance to the state tournament.
