Eleven area individuals qualify for Class A state track meet
PIPESTONE — The Murray County Central boys and Canby/Minneota girls each finished fifth at the Section 3A track and field championships on Thursday. Each of the two schools earned a handful of state qualifiers to continue their season for another week.
Canby/Minneota had state qualifiers in five girls events and a boys event. MCC, meanwhile, had two individuals and a relay team qualify for state.
Mya Pesek was the individual runner-up for the Lancers in the girls 1600 meter race, setting a new personal record of 5:27.90 in the event to return to the state meet. She also placed fifth in the 3200 meters at 13:03.71.Jostock, Ourada and Kockelman also joined Jada VanEngen in the 4×400-meter relay for a time of 4:08.07, qualifying for state as section runners-up.
On the boys side, Canby/Minneota’s 4×800-meter relay team of Owen Peterson, Brett Stoks, Kendon Knutson and Tallen Merritt finished as the runners-up at 8:50.76, trailing only MCC’s Brayden Gilb, Beckett Stelter, Henry Carlson and Alexander Betz at 8:31.77.
The Rebels’ relay title marked one of three state qualifiers for the team, alongside Gabe Wolske’s personal-best throw in the discus at 154-06 in the discus to take third, and Charley Holm’s height of 8-08 in the pole vault to take second.
Lakeview excelled in the throwing events on the day, sending three athletes to state for five events. Jackson Staab was a two-event section champion on the day, winning the shot put at 61-02 and the discus at 162-10. Broden Stensrud also won the wheelchair version of both events at 19-06.25 and 50-07, and Adeline Louwagie earned a state berth with a runner-up finish in the girls discus with a personal record of 129-09.
Lakeview also sends Garrett Schafer to state in the long jump after he finished as the runner up with a personal-best distance of 20-06.75.
MCC’s boys team finished with a score of 53.5 points, trailing Hancock’s 83, Montevideo’s 60, Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton’s 56 and Redwood Valley’s 55.5. Lakeview also placed eighth with 47 points, Wabasso took 12th with 24 and Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central took 14th with 20.
Canby/Minneota and Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd also placed 17th and 18th with 18 and 16 points, respectively, and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton’s 5 and Yellow Medicine East’s 2 slotted them into 21st and 22nd.
The Lancer girls’ total of 47.5 trailed Luverne’s 94.5, Hills-Beaver Creek’s 80, Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg’s 67 and Redwood Valley’s 57.2.
Lakeview’s 35 points were good for eighth place and LQPV/DB’s 25.2 were good for 12th. Wabasso and MCC placed 14th with 20 and 15th with 19.7 points, respectively. RTR, YME and WWG/RRC slotted into 18th, 19th and 20th with 11, 9 and 8 points, and TMB finished 23rd with 4 points.
The Lancers were loaded with relay talent on the day. Jordyn Jostock, Karlie Wollum, Brynn Kockelman and Taylor Ourada won the 4×200 in 1:45.05 and placed third in the 4×100 at 49.62 to qualify for state.
Wabasso had a pair of section champions behind new personal records from Andrew and Liz Morin. Andrew won the boys 3200 meters at 9:59.60, and Liz won the girls triple jump at 34-08. Morin also placed eighth in the long jump at 15-05.5, and the Rabbits had another handful of strong performances with Tyson Lightfoot’s third-place finishes in the boys 110- and 300-meter hurdles, Elsie Leopold’s fourth-place finish in the 800 and Madelyn Fogelson’s fifth-place finish in the shot put.
Brynn Gloege contributed in a big way to the success of the LQPV/DB girls. The freshman won the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:22.89, and she also anchored a 4×400-meter relay team with Makiah Pust, Sadie Rosendahl and Chloe Gloege to a first-place finish at 4:07.60.
WWG/RRC’s Adrian Yang was the pole vault runner-up at 11-10.
The state track and field meet will be held at St. Michael-Albertville High School from Thursday through Saturday. The Class A preliminaries will begin on Thursday at 3:30 p.m., along with the finals for the boys 3200 meters at 6:13 p.m. The remainder of the final events will be held on Friday starting at 3:30 p.m.
