MILROY — Early offense and a strong finish led the Milroy Irish to a 14-4 mercy-rule win over the Stark Longhorns, Friday in non-conference amateur baseball play.

The Longhorns got on the board early with a first-inning run, but the Irish answered right away to take the lead for the remainder of the game. Dominic Dolan was hit by a pitch and Trevor Smith walked to start the bottom of the inning, and Andrew Wallen hit a two-run double to take the lead. Griffin Zick also reached on an error to score Wallen, bringing the Irish edge to 3-1.

Connor Lanoue earned the win on the mound by throwing the first six innings. He struck out three batters while limiting the Longhorns to one earned and one unearned run on 10 hits. Tyler Peterson also gave up an earned and an unearned run over two innings of relief.

Stark capitalized on a Milroy error and a wild pitch to score a pair of runs in the top of the eight, snapping its four-inning drought and trimming the Irish lead to four runs. Yet, Milroy answered in the bottom of the frame to put the game away.

Trevor Smith got the Irish rally started with a single, and walks to Derek Smith and Wallen loaded the bases with one out. Anthony Dolan came in as a pinch hitter and reached on an error to score one run, Zick drew a walk to score another and Carson Javers kept the momentum rolling with an RBI single.

Leading 11-4, Peterson drew a bases-loaded walk and Tyler Alcorn reached on an error to put the Irish one run away from the mercy rule. Dominic Dolan then worked a walk to push across the walk-off run.

Zick led the Irish offensively with two hits, a walk and three RBIs. Dominic Dolan and Wallen each also drove in a pair of runs, coming on a double and two walks for Wallen and a single and a walk for Dolan.

After its trio of first-inning runs, the Irish tacked on another four in the second. Singles by Lanoue and Dominic Dolan, with a Moses Dolan walk in between, loaded the bases with no outs. Trevor Smith was hit by a pitch to plate one run, Derek Smith hit a sacrifice fly to score another, and after an Andrew Wallen walk, Zick hit a two-run single to bring the score to 7-1.

Windom 4, Milroy 3

WINDOM — Following Friday’s dominant win, the Irish dropped a heartbreaker to Windom on Sunday. The Irish jumped out to an early lead over the Pirates, but Windom scored the tying run in the ninth and walked off the Irish in the 11th.

Milroy led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth and retired each of the first two batters of the frame. Yet, a walk, a wild pitch and consecutive passed balls allowed the Pirates to score the tying run. Both teams went scoreless in the 10th, but Southwest Minnesota State University graduate Chase McDaniel took advantage of the ghost runner on second base in the 11th with the walk-off RBI single.

Trevor Smith threw the first five innings for Milroy, surrendering one earned and one unearned run on six hits and five walks. Craig Lasley threw three shutout innings of relief, limiting Windom to a pair of hits, while Derek Smith gave up one unearned run over two innings and Carson Javers took the loss by giving up an unearned run while giving up one out.

Consecutive singles from Trevor and Derek Smith and Tyler Peterson loaded the bases with one out in the first, and Andrew Wallen drew first blood with an RBI single. With two outs, Carson Javers reached on an error to score another pair of runs for a 3-0 Milroy lead.

Smith led the Irish attack with three hits while Peterson also reached base twice with a single and a walk. Still, the Milroy offense went silent after the first.

Windom scored a run in the bottom of the first and the bottom of the second, but neither team scored again until the Pirates’ tying run in the ninth.

McDaniel led Windom with a pair of hits and an RBI in the game. His fellow former Mustangs Kobe Lovell and Jake Tauer also contributed, with a single, two walls and an RBI for Tauer and two singles for Lovell.

Milroy falls to 4-3 and next goes on the road to take on Faribault, Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Starting at $3.95/week.
