Houseman throws second Marshall no-hitter of season in 13-0 win

Marshall pitcher Olivia Houseman throws a pitch during Marshall's 13-0 win over Waseca in Marshall Monday afternoon. Houseman threw a no-hitter in the game.

MARSHALL — What was originally supposed to be scheduled as a doubleheader turned into a single game in which the Marshall Tigers softball team defeated the Waseca Bluejays 13-0 in five innings on Saturday morning. Olivia Houseman threw a no-hitter, giving her the second Tiger no-hitter of the season following Morgan Bjella’s perfect game on April 25.

The Tigers scored their 13 runs in the first three innings of play, including an eight run third inning. Halla Casavan and Randi Wendorff both hit home runs in the game and had three RBIs apiece.

The Tigers had only three hits but had eight runs scored in the third inning. The Bluejays walked five Marshall batters. Along with Casavan’s home run, Brielle Riess hit a rope out to deep left center field for a two-run double. Bjella also had an RBI single and made it 13-0.

The Tigers’ defense held and so did the Bluejays’, setting up potentially the ending of the game and Olivia Houseman no hitter opportunity.

Houseman struck out the first batter of the fifth inning, putting her two outs away from the accomplishment. Then the next batter hit the ball to shortstop Wendorff, but the ball went off her glove and the runner was aboard. The play was ruled an error instead of a base hit. Houseman struck out the next batter and a groundout ended the game.

“I thought our girls did well getting on base and getting a lead,” Marshall head coach Jack Houseman said. “We had a lot of runners on base, which is good. Olivia pitched good today, worked ahead of the batters, did a great job of closing out the game for us. Bjella and Olivia are experienced pitching in a lot of games. They know what they’re doing and we are proud of them with all they do in the off-season to prepare for these moments. We got five more games next week and keep playing solid defense. Clean up our defense. We have to continue to work on the little things. We’re looking forward to finishing the season strong.”

Houseman finished with nine strikeouts and two walks in the game.

“Well I had a lot of fun today,” Olivia Houseman said. “Didn’t realize I had a no hitter to be honest until someone told me after the game. It is a cool thing. My riseball was working today and then worked in a few screwballs. It gives me a lot of confidence knowing that my teammates have my back. It helps being up there pitching when having a lead.”

The Marshall Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday when they host the Wabasso Rabbits at 5 p.m.

Starting at $3.95/week.
