Mail scam hits SW Minnesota

Another mail scam is circulating in the area.

A woman from Tyler on Wednesday brought some items she received in the mail to the Independent. One was an official-looking check, with a purported value of $3,735.50.

The letter than accompanied the check called for people to become a “Trainee Independent Private Evaluator” – a three-month assignment that puts teams of people in an undercover role in prepaid card stores to purchase “Vanilla Reload Network Cards.”

Letter recipients are told to purchase six of the cards for $500 each, all from different locations.

People are given a 24-hour window upon check activation to complete the assignment. However, a bank in Marshall told the Independent that that 24-hour window doesn’t allow time for the check to clear, meaning the victim wouldn’t receive any funds.

A note on the letter warns the recipient that this is a “secret and confidential” assignment and that any discussion with staff at the location they visit will void the assignment.

Starting at $3.95/week.
