A fresh season

MARSHALL – With the upcoming local concert series, people can sing along with the music of Neil Diamond, experience the longevity of a vocal quartet and listen to a large array of music genres.

A wide range of music is part of the Marshall Area Fine Arts Council’s 2015-2016 concert series, which starts in the fall. All of Marshall’s concerts will be at the Schwan Community Center for the Performing Arts.

“It’s a good variety,” said Karen Bakke, head of MAFAC’s performance committee.

MAFAC has a reciprocity agreement with the concert series in Redwood Falls and Montevideo. A MAFAC subscription will allow patrons free admission to the concerts in both communities. The first concert will be on Sept. 22 in Redwood Falls, featuring a tribute to Neil Diamond.

Kicking off the season in Marshall is The Four Freshman at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27. The group was founded in 1948 by brothers Ross and Don Barbour, along with Bob Flanigan and Hal Kratzsch. Its first single was “It’s a Blue World” back in 1952. The group’s first LP, “Voices in Modern,” was released in 1955, featuring jazz and vocal pop music.

“It was one of the top vocal groups of the ’50s,” Bakke said.

Throughout the years, new lineups of the group keeps its music alive into the 21st century. Flanigan was the last original member of the group by 1977, and he retired in 1992. The current lineup is Tommy Boynton, who sings first tenor and plays bass; Stein Malvey, who sings second tenor and plays guitar; Curtis Calderon, who sings baritone and plays trumpet/flugelhorn and Bob Ferreira, who sings bass and plays percussion.

The Southeast Alaskan Odyssey will take the stage at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016. It is a family group, the Zahaskys, who come from Juneau, Alaska. Southeast Alaskan Odyssey performs a variety of genres, including swing, jazz, bluegrass, pop, Celtic and gospel.

Southeast Alaskan Odyssey includes Paul and Melissa Zahasky and their children, Laura, Quinn and Abby. The family plays a variety of instruments, such as the guitar, fiddle, mandolin, bass and banjo.

When MAFAC met with Allied Concert Services, Bakke said the family group “sure sounded good.”

“I’m anxious to hear them,” she said, referring to next year’s concert.

At 7 p.m., Saturday, March 19, 2016, the International String Trio will perform. The trio was started in 1999 by alumni from the Berklee College of Music and play Gypsy, jazz, Appalachian folk, acoustic world music, virtuosic classical arrangements and popular songs from movies.

According to its website, the International String Trio plays about 150 gigs a year at concert halls, jazz clubs, universities, schools and home. It includes Ben Powell on violin, Slava Tolstoy on guitar and Ippei Ichimaru on acoustic bass and percussion.

“They’re very well-educated in music,” Bakke said.
