Finding the right stuff

Lots of activity on last day of city wide garage sales

Marshall resident Naomi Elgard found a Ninja blender, “Harry Potter” books, clothes and a sweeper that attaches to the back of a lawn mower.

Tom Brown and his wife, Maggie, found baby clothes for their 4-month old son, Thomas.

And Corey Anderson of Balaton found the tools he needs for two roofing projects on his to do list.

Bargain hunters and sellers reported good results during the last day of the three-day Marshall City Wide Garage Sales.

Temperatures hung around the 50s for most of Saturday with breezy conditions. So Kris Gruhot with D&G Excavating offered the company’s winter storage shop to employees for the three-day sale. Tables were set up for customers to browse up and down the aisles.

“So we just set them (tables) up and invited people to bring their excess junk. Told them they had to work a three-hour shift if they have their stuff on it,” Gruhot said. “It worked out really well. It was a little chilly today, opened the door a little while and I couldn’t handle it.”

With the door shut to keep the cold out, Gruhot advertised the garage sale on the digital sign outside.

The Browns found some of their baby clothes at the D&G Excavating garage sale.

“We were primarily looking for baby clothes,” Maggie Brown said.

“I did find the occasional DVD,” Tom Brown said, while carrying their son in a car seat.

Kyra Skogrand is preparing to leave for college in the fall and was trying to sell off some of her clothes she doesn’t need now.

“We decided it was a good time to go through things before she has to pack up and slim down to an apartment,” Kyra’s mother, Cory, said.

“Set it free and bring someone else joy,” she said.

Just outside Marshall, Brittney Schaefer was holding a large sale inside her dad’s spacious storage room attached to his home.

“The first day is always the best. It was busy all day. It was Thursday from 8 to 6. People coming in all day,” Schaefer said.

She holds her sale every year and puts out flyers and posts Facebook ads to drum up business.

“I always say it’s going to my last one,” she said.

Her dad, Dan Schaefer, says he likes to hang around and talk to people

“Just had a couple here from Marshall. Probably talked to them for a half hour,” he said.

He also sells charcuterie boards that he hand crafts himself.

“I have a sawmill now. I don’t build anymore. I’ve got a sawmill and work in my shop, tables and custom tables and coffee tables,” he said.

Anderson found his roofing tools at the Schaefer sale.

“This was the first place we stopped,” he said. “We were coming from Balaton, saw this one first.”

Back in Marshall, Cathy Louwagie and her daughter, Megan Hoflock, had a lot of luck selling baby and children’s clothes.

“We just started yesterday. But it’s been good. It was busier yesterday. It’s starting to pick up today,” Louwagie said. “It was good to see those people come around. We gave them good deals.”

Hoflock agreed that the sale was successful.

“We have lots of kid clothes. That’s mostly what sold because all my kids are grown up,” she said.

And it wasn’t just the adults making money.

Riker Hoflock, 11, and Emmett Louwagie sat behind a coffee table set up in front of the driveway selling lemonade.

At another location, Kaelyn Citrowske, 10, sold little bracelets at her mom’s garage sale.

“She has made more money than I did,” Nikki Citrowske said.

There are some sellers who have a lot of experience when it comes to garage sales. Mike Dale said he held a rummage sale 13 straight weeks last summer. He held another one on Saturday to sell off items from his mother’s estate.

“Well, I had totes out here from there all the way out (pointing to the end of the driveway). Lawn mower over there, sold that. We sold a lot of stuff,” Dale said. “I was surprised there were this many people out on a Saturday. You know opening fishing. I’m sure there are ballgames going on today.”

Like Dale, Nikki Citrowske was happy with the results for the day.

“It’s great, we love doing this,” she said.
