Stopped short

MARSHALL — The Marshall Tigers girls’ hockey team dropped their fourth straight game Thursday night with a 2-1 home loss to New Ulm. The Tigers led early but were unable to hold onto the lead.
Mady Girard opened the scoring for the Tigers less than three minutes into the second period. Coming off a successful penalty kill where Marshall dominated possession, they appeared to control all momentum.
The Tigers won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Girard recovered the puck by the goal line. She shot it down low into the New Ulm goalie’s left pad but recovered her own rebound and slipped the goalie by the goalie to give Marshall the lead.
The Tigers’ defense came out firing on all cylinders. They held the Eagles to six shots in the first and seven in the second. New Ulm hardly got any scoring opportunities.
Yet, when the Eagles did get opportunities, however, they converted. With six seconds left in the second period, New Ulm dealt a crushing blow to Marshall, scoring from a close-range rebound to take a 2-1 lead going into the third frame.
New Ulm tied the game 10 minutes into the second period with a goal from near the blue line. The scorer’s momentum was going backward, and her shot appeared to be more of an attempt to avoid getting called for offsides than an effort to score, but it found the top shelf to even the score at 1-1.
At the end of the first period, New Ulm nearly hit another buzzer-beater on a power play, but the shot was ruled no goal after it pinged off the crossbar.
Following the loss, Marshall (1-6) will travel to Windom, where they’ll face off against the Eagles at 5 p.m.
