Blackjacks dominate top of leaderboard at Benson Invite

BENSON — All four scorers for the Dawson-Boyd girls golf team finished tied for fourth or better, along with another top-10 finish, as the Blackjacks ran away with a win at the Benson Invitational on Wednesday.

Alyssa Swedzinski led the sea of black and yellow atop the 32-player leaderboard with an individual first-place finish. She senior Blackjack shot a 7-over 79 on the day, including a pair of back-9 birdies and nine pars.

Just behind her, Kylar Hjelmeland tied for second with an 81 and Laura Schreier and Claire Stratmoen tied for fourth with an 84. Hjelmeland carded four birdies on the day while Schreier’s round was marked by her consistency with nine pars.

As a team, Dawson-Boyd tallied a score of 328 to finish well ahead of Community Christian’s 351 and Benson’s 391. Canby and minneota placed fourth and fifth with a 405 and 425, respectively, while Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa did not field team scores.

Canby’s Maddison Richter tied Hjelmeland for second place in the tournament, playing particularly well on the back nine with two birdies and three pars on the first five holes of it.

While not contributing to the team score, Chloe Stratmoen also placed ninth with a 91 and Myiah Bothun placed 20th with a 105.

Ava Panka was the top performer for the Vikings in 15th place with a 102, followed by Brynn Rost in 20th with a 105. Alexis Thostenson and Addysen Kiley each shot a 109 to tie for 24th as the Vikings’ final scorers.

Gracie Mamer was Canby’s No. 2 scorer in 18th place with a 103. Presley Richter’s 107 and Jayda Namken’s 114 rounded out the Lancer scorers in 22nd and 26th, respectively.

Minneota and Canby next compete in the Section 3A tournament in Worthington on Wednesday at 8 a.m., and Dawson-Boyd returns to action with the 5A tournament in Willmar at the same time.

BENSON BOYS INVITE

BENSON — Owen Dalager’s runner-up finish at Benson Golf Club on Wednesday led the Minneota boys golf team to third place in the 12-team Benson Invitational on Wednesday.

Dalager carded a 5-over 77, including two birdies and 10 pars to finish near the top of the 70-player field. Starting on hole 10, Dalager had a 12-hole stretch in which he went over par just once to go 1-under.

The Vikings shot a 336 as a team to tie Dawson-Boyd for third, finishing one stroke back of runner-up Benson. Lac qui Parle Valley won the event with a team score of 327.

Canby also placed fifth in the event with a 343.

Canby’s Lane Citrowske was the individual champion of the event, posting a 3-over 75 to eke out the win. From holes 5 through 14, Citrowske carded 10 consecutive pars, and added another pair of pars and a birdie on the final three holes of the back 9.

Freshman Blayze Hulzebos also posted a top-10 round for Minneota, finishing ninth with an 11-over 83. Hulzebos opened the back 9 with back-to-back birdies and added another on hole 4.

Evan Mork was Dawson-Boyd’s top performer, slotting into fifth place with an 8-over 80 behind nine pars and a pair of birdies.

Depth was a strength for the Blackjacks in the tournament. Evan Menning’s 84 and Mason Solem’s 85 left them in 11th and 13th, respectively, and Owen Schindler placed 21st with an 87.

Jase Sorensen’s 86 led him to a 15th place finish for the Vikings, and eighth grader Braxton Hennen rounded out the team’s scorers in 27th with a 90.

Canby’s Isaac Bollerud tied Sorensen for 15th. The Lancers also had Daven VanEngen and Jaxson Ramberg tie for 30th with a 91.

Minneota and Canby next compete in the Section 3A tournament in Worthington on Wednesday at 8 a.m., and Dawson-Boyd returns to action with the 5A tournament in Willmar at the same time.
