MARSHALL — The Marshall Junior Legion Black 17U baseball team’s offense has been red-hot to start the season, scoring a total of 39 runs in four games, including 18 runs on 23 total hits in its previous game.
While Marshall’s lineup wasn’t able to get many hits against Hutchinson Black in the opening day of their home tournament on Friday, they were still able to find a similar level of scoring, as Marshall used just three hits to plate 10 runs and defeat Hutchinson Black 10-0 in five innings.
“It was a lot different than last weekend where we had 23 hits in one game and [today] it was the opposite; we had three hits but scored 10 runs, so it was good,” Marshall coach Chace Pollock said. “The kids played well and took what the defense gave us and I’m proud of the way we started the tournament.”
Marshall jumped out to a quick start, as Braeden Myhre drew a leadoff walk before Jude Knudson and Coby Brownlee connected on back-to-back singles to plate a run. After Braxton Koster reached to load the bases with no outs, Marshall added four more runs on a trio of wild pitches and an RBI groundout by Carter Kepler to make it 5-0 after one.
Hutchinson had an opportunity to get on the board in the top half of the second, using a hit by pitch and a pair of walks to load the bases, but Marshall starter Karson Rowe would get a strikeout to get out of the jam. Marshall then answered right back in the bottom half of the frame, with Rowe and Knudson drawing walks and Myhre reaching on a single before a pair of wild pitches brought in two runs. Marshall wasn’t done there, as another wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Kepler plated two more runs to push its lead to 9-0 after two.
After a scoreless third, Hutchinson had another chance to score in the fourth, loading the bases again with two outs, but just like he did in the second, Rowe got a strikeout to escape the frame. In the bottom of the frame, Brownlee and Collin Klenken reached on dropped third strikes and Kepler drew a walk to load the bases before a sacrifice fly from Ashton Blomberg plated a run to bring it to the 10-0 final.
Brownlee led Marshall with a hit and an RBI while Myhre and Knudson each had a hit.
Rowe earned the win on the mound, going five innings while allowing no runs on two hits and struck out eight. Pollock said at times, Rowe was struggling with some things but did a good job of getting in the zone when he needed to.
“Karson didn’t have his best stuff [today] he was kind of fighting through some things but when he was in the zone he was really good,” Pollock said. “He was really good for us last weekend as well and he did a good job of getting in rhythm and working out of a couple of jams.”
