MARSHALL — Sometimes in baseball, a team can be in a hurry to find patience.
Such was the case Wednesday when the Marshall A’s defeated the Wabasso Jaxx 14-4 in a seven-inning Corn Belt League game at Legion Field.
Of those 14 runs, 11 came in the final three innings.
“We kept getting out front (of pitches) early in the game,” said Marshall manager Zach Olson. “Things were slow until our second time around (seeing their pitching), we started to stay back, and find some patience.”
That patience resulted in numerous walks and hard-hit balls. Combine that with a trio of errors and you have two crooked-number innings en route to the team’s victory. The A’s are 8-9, while the youthful Jaxx have one victory on the season.
Center fielder Andrew Stelter had one of Marshall’s 14 hits in the game, a second-pitch home run blast in the fourth inning that staked the team to a 3-1 lead.
Marshall’s two big innings were the fifth, when it scored four runs, and the seventh, when it scored six to end the game via the mercy rule.
Marshall used two hits, a Wabasso error and a hit-batter to score the four runs. Josh Kraft had two RBIs in the inning with a seeing-eye pop-up between the Wabasso shortstop, center fielder and left fielder. Crossing the plate were Charlie Jacobson, Jackson Sirovy, Tyler Wichmann and Cody Wichmann.
The A’s broke it open in the seventh, scoring six runs. Both Tyler Wichmann and Josh Kraft had deep shots to straightaway center field that got lost in the ivy, resulting in ground-rule doubles. Four hits and four walks contributed to the six-run outburst, which ended the contest.
Liam Kruse started on the mound for the A’s. He gave up seven hits, struck out eight and walked three. Logan Terfehr came on in relief in the seventh.
“He’s been a ‘Steady Eddie’ for us all year,” said Olson of the Marshall reliever.
The Jaxx started CJ Theis, who went five innings. He struck out three, walked five and gave up eight hits and seven earned runs. He gave way to Carter Guetter, who gave up four runs in his one inning of work. Maxim Dillon came on with no outs and the bases loaded in the seventh, when the A’s broke things wide open.
Samuel Guetter led Wabasso with two hits. Also reaching via hits were Colton Taylor, Deagen Maurice, Josh Guetter, Carter Guetter, and Aiden Hugert.
Jacobson had an outstanding evening at the plate for Marshall, collecting three hits. Cody Wichmann, Josh Kraft, Kruse and Tyler Wichmann had two hits each. Other hits came from Zach Olson, Ryan Schwagel, Connor Neubeck and Stelter.
The A’s play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Willmar, and Sunday at 5 p.m. in Hadley. The league all-star game is Saturday in St. James.
Wabasso hosts Raymond on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and the Milroy Yankees at 5 p.m. Sunday.
