SMSU SOCCER: Quick start isn’t enough, SMSU falls to Winona State

WINONA — the Southwest Minnesota State soccer team dropped their third straight match, falling to Winona State 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Mustangs came out of the gate on a mission, as Alex Lotts scored from nearly 25 yards out to give SMSU a 1-0 lead in the third minute. It was the second of the season for Lotts and was a refreshing goal for the Mustangs after losing the previous two games on long range strikes.

WSU netted the equalizer in the 11th minute, with Riley Harmon scoring off an Ellie Wardell cross that navigated through the SMSU defense. The Warriors weren’t done for the half, as Reanna Weil cashed in off a pass from Abigail Williams in the 42nd minute to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

The second half saw four shots on goal from SMSU and three from WSU, with each goalie saving every shot they faced. The final ten minutes also saw three yellow cards, two on the Warriors and one on the Mustangs.

Lotts and Abbey Hoisington each led the way with two shots on goal, as Selena Prolic, Destinee Lopez, and Katie Oatman accounted for a shot on goal apiece. Meghan Harkin got the start in net, making five saves in the loss.

SMSU will be back in action Friday at home against Minot State, before UMary comes in to face the Mustangs on Sunday.
