BECKER — Minneota’s Owen Dalager led the area at the boys Class A State Tournament with a 24th-place individual finish, while Dawson-Boyd’s Evan Mork and Canby’s Lane Citrowske followed close behind. The state tournament wrapped up with its second day of competition on Wednesday at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker.

Dalager recorded four birdies on day 2 to card a 5-over 77, two strokes better than his 7-over 79 opening round score, to finish with a score of 156.

Heritage Christian Academy’s Alex Rhode took first overall with a 1-under 143, while HCA won the state title as a team with a 603.

The Vikings competed at state as a team as well, for the first time in 42 years, and finished with a team score of 658 to finish in eighth place of the eight competing teams.

“It’s been pretty cool. Our school hasn’t made it for about 40-something years, so it is cool to just be here,” Minneota Easton Sheik said. “Our team shot pretty good, but it’s just that there’s a lot of competition.”

A few of the Minneota boys noted some disappointment in their personal shooting performances. But, despite any frustrations, the team appreciated what this group of Vikings were able to accomplish in starting a new standard for Minneota golf, something that the program hasn’t done in over four decades.

“It was fun … It was pretty cool to be on this team,” Minneota freshman Blayze Hulzebos said. “We are all pretty young, so we are growing in golf and getting better.”

Minneota made its state-tournament debut in 1984, and this was its first time going back since, making it a season to remember.

“For the boys’ team, it’s good to see them get some experience. We have a pretty young team, so hopefully we will be able to punch our ticket again in the next couple of years,” Hennen said. “We had a good showing yesterday [of fans]. A lot of them came up for day 1 … I think most of the parents, if not all the parents, were here, so that was pretty cool to see.”

The Vikings won the Section 3A championship to earn their berth into the state tournament by defeating Lakeview. The Lakers won each of the previous four section titles to make it to state as a team.

“I don’t think we got the finish that we wanted, but we played some pretty solid golf today. We played better than yesterday. We had a few holes for a few golfers that got a little shaky, but pretty solid showing for today,” Minneota head coach Walker Hennen said. “It was a great time. The boys were super fun to hang out with, great camaraderie, and [they are] good to each other.”

Along with Dalager, Hulzebos shot a 161 to place 39th overall out of the 88 individual golfers. Jase Sorensen followed a stroke behind with a 162, while Easton Sheik, Berkley Sheik and Randy Soresen carded a 180, 195 and 197, respectively.

“Yesterday went pretty well. Today, the front 9 went pretty well, shot a 38, but just got really unlucky on the other 9,” Hulzebos said. He shot a 45 in the front-9, and carded a 78 overall on day 1.

This was also Easton Sheik’s last round of 18 dressed as a Viking, being the team’s lone senior this season. He’s been a part of the team for two years.

“It is pretty special. We haven’t done this before, and at the start of the season, every team has their goal of making it to state. It’s cool to actually be here,” Easton Sheik said of finishing his prep career at state.

Also around the area, Mork and Citrowske put together two days of competitive performances and both finished tied for 31st with a 158. This is Citrowske’s first year at state, and Mork’s second.

“It was fun. I didn’t play my best, but it’s nice out, so can’t complain,” Mork said. “I started off terrible on both 9s, but I played both the back-9s pretty solid … I just tried to stay out of trouble the most that I could”

Mork shot a 77 on day 1 with a pair of birdies, and tallied another four on Wednesday with a score of 81. Citrowske shot an 80 and 78 between the two days with a total of three birdies.

“I started to figure out scrambling holes, making putts, snuck in a birdie,” Citrowske said. “It [playing at state] was great, I had fun … I am pretty proud of myself. It’s been a pretty big journey.”

This was also Mork’s senior season, and Citrowske will return for one more season.

Mork said that being a part of the Blackjacks’ golf program has meant a lot, noting that he’s had a fun experience.

Dawson-Boyd was also represented by Carson Stratmoen once again this year, making his fourth state tournament appearance, and carded a 160 to finish in 35th. He shot a 79 on Tuesday and finished off the tournament with an 81.

Other area indvidual golfers also got the opportunity to compete at state this year to represent their schools.

Ledgen Javens of Lakeview shot a 161 to finish in 39th, notably with a pair of birdies in the second day of competition.

Kaden Landsman of Murray County Central shot a 168 as well, as did Finn Batalden from Red Rock Central with a 177.
