Wing entered the day in a tie for 23rd at 3-over, but he got off to a strong start in his second round to make the charge into 15th. After starting on hole 10, Wing rattled off eight consecutive pars and a hole-18 birdie to go into the turn at 1-under on the day. He also carded a birdie on hole 6 before closing at 2-over for the day and 6-over 149 for the tournament.
“[The birdie] felt really good. I had some momentum going into the back, but had a couple bad bogeys on the last three holes. It was a good round, but a little disappointed at the end,” Wing said.
Going into the day, Wing’s focus was just on having fun and staying loose, he said.
“There’s no pressure, really. I’m here, I made it to state, that’s all that really matters,” Wing said. “I tried to medal, that would’ve been awesome, but 15th is great.”

The 4-over two-day score put Wing in a tie with Minnewaska Area’s Thatcher Sherlin, Perham’s Reid Aakre and Little Falls’ Peyton Carr for 12th place.
Southwest Christian’s Henry Johnson won the meet at 6-under 138, beating out the next closest competitor by five strokes. Johnson went as low as 8-under before a pair of bogeys brought him back up. Blake’s Jack Mark was the runner-up at 142 and Legacy Christian’s Braylon Ylkanen took home the bronze at 144.
Marshall compiled a team score of 626 for the tournament, leaving them six strokes back of St. Cloud Cathedral and six strokes up on Rock Ridge. Blake edged out Southwest Christian for the championship, 585-588, and Totino-Grace rounded out the podium at 590.
“There are a lot of good things we can take away. Lot of good shots and a few mental errors that are correctable,” Marshall head coach Scott Midtaune said. “We’re a fairly young team, returning five out of six, and having a little experience too is going to help. Hopefully we’re able to put together some stuff next year and hopefully make another run at this.”
Elijah Winn entered the second day of competition in a tie for fourth place, but he fell to 34th after a 10-over brought his total to 153.

Ethan Wendorff was Marshall’s No. 3 scorer on the day, shooting a 10-over to finish with a two-day score of 160, good for 62nd place in the 88-player field. Wendorff carded a triple-bogey on his first hole and was 5-over after his first three holes, but he kept his composure to rattle off five consecutive pars and a birdie to enter the front 9 at 4-over on the day.
Jaylen Koster was the Tigers’ final scorer, shooting an 11-over on the day to place 74th at 164. He recorded six back-9 pars and another three on the front 9.
Carter Manthei and Keegan Fossum also competed for Marshall, placing 78th at 166 and 81st at 167, respectively. Manthei shot 12-over on Wednesday and Fossum shot 13-over.
Fossum is the lone senior on the Marshall boys’ roster, with everyone else slated to come back for another year.
“Keegan’s been that steady guy for us who’s never going to be too flashy, but was always consistent. You know, high 70s, low 80s,” Midtaune said. “Never too high, never too low… Yesterday he started off rocky, but all of a sudden he had [seven pars in eight holes] and shot an 81.”

Despite losing a key veteran presence on the varsity team, the Tigers still have plenty to build on from this year’s state tournament appearance with five varsity players and all four scorers coming back.
“I think our team will be really good next year, even though we’re losing Keegan. We have a young team, so I think it’ll be good,” Wing said.
