MARSHALL — With a quick scribble of the pen, the next step of Chase Douglas’ athletic career was complete. The Marshall senior signed his National Letter of Intent on Thursday to play baseball at Wayne State College.
Douglas said he’s relieved to finally have this day come and officially be committed.
“It feels good,” Douglas said. “I signed a little late but it feels really good to get it off of my shoulders. I feel relaxed.”
Douglas said his dad working for the school and the baseball team reaching out to him helped with his decision.
“My dad got a job there about a year ago, so I’ve been looking at it for a while now,” Douglas said. “And then the baseball team just reached out, so it kind of worked perfectly and I made my decision.”
The last few years, Douglas has helped guide Marshall on both the diamond and the hardwood. This past winter, Douglas averaged 6.7 points per game, 3.4 rebounds per game, 3.8 assists and two steals per game.
Douglas said baseball coach Chace Pollock has had a huge impact on him throughout his time at MHS and does a lot to help him get better each day.
“Coach Pollock does a lot in the summer and during the school year we have Sunday night baseball and he helps me a lot with that,” Douglas said. “He also reaches out to the college coaches and tries to get me to go to camps around the area so that really helps.”
Douglas added his teammates motivate him in practice every day and are always willing to work on their games.
“They’ve pushed me a lot and will stay after practice to get hits or if we don’t have practice get some batting practice in,” Douglas said. They’ve also been positive throughout my whole career so it’s been good.”
Douglas said he plans to major in sports management and will play in the middle infield for the Wildcats. Before he goes to WSC, though, Douglas still has the rest of the current baseball season with Marshall ahead of him and is looking forward to the playoffs and hopes they can make a deep run as a team.
“We’ve got a lot of key games coming up so I’m really looking forward to that,” Douglas said. “And I’m looking forward to playoffs and hopefully we can make it to state, that’s the goal.”
