Spring energy fills every corner of Marshall Public Schools

Spring is always an exciting and fastpaced time across Marshall Public Schools, and this year is no exception. As we move toward the end of the school year, our buildings are buzzing with celebrations, performances, learning experiences, and milestones that showcase the great work happening every day at all levels of our district.

At Park Side Elementary, the spring season has been filled with smiles. Students celebrated the end of third quarter with a Spring Fling, enjoyed visits from beloved storybook characters Thing 1, Thing 2, and The Cat in the Hat, and took part in Week of the Young Child activities.

Our youngest learners also shared their talents during well-attended kindergarten and first grade concerts. As we look ahead, registration is open for the 2026-27 school year, and families are encouraged to register early–especially those interested in preschool, as spots are filling fast.

Southview Elementary has been busy with learning and music this spring. Students recently wrapped up another strong concert season with outstanding attendance from families and community members. Our staff continue their work supporting students through thoughtful interventions and professional learning, ensuring every learner has what they need to be successful.

Marshall Middle School has seen tremendous energy this spring as well. Students participated in meaningful learning experiences, including the popular seventh grade field trip to Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center. MMS staff also had the opportunity to share Marshall’s reading intervention success with a national audience and continue strengthening relationships and supports through the BARR network. Spring activities and athletics are fully underway, adding to the excitement throughout the building.

At Marshall High School, this time of year is filled with tradition and celebration. Prom recently took place and was very well attended, creating lasting memories for our students. We now look ahead to two important recognition events: the Pride in the Tiger Scholarship Ceremony on May 13 which honors student achievement and the generosity of our community donors, and graduation for the Class of 2026 on May 29 starting at 7 p.m. as we celebrate this milestone with students and their families.

Our Area Learning Center and Career and Technical Institute continue to provide meaningful, handson opportunities for students. From graduating seniors to real-world learning in mechanics, manufacturing, healthcare, and trades programming, students are gaining valuable skills and experiences that prepare them for future success.

While the many activities and celebrations take center stage this time of year, it is also important to recognize the foundation that supports learning across our district: Minnesota State Academic Standards. These standards guide instruction at all grade levels and are reviewed and updated regularly through a rigorous, stateled vetting process. This year marked the implementation of the new Language Arts standards. Updated Social Studies standards will be implemented next year, followed by Math standards the year after.

Community members should know that these standards are not developed in isolation. There are opportunities for educators, parents, and community members to review drafts and participate in the feedback and revision process at the state level, helping ensure standards reflect both best practices and Minnesota values.

As we head into the final weeks of the school year, I want to thank our students, staff, families, and community for your continued support of Marshall Public Schools. Spring is a time of reflection, celebration, and forward momentum–and we have much to be proud of as we finish the year strong.
