MARSHALL — Although facing a deficit through the first four innings, the Marshall baseball team rallied late in the fifth to take a one-run lead and held on for a 4-3 comeback win against St. Peter Tuesday night in a Big South Conference matchup.
Through a competitive defensive start between the Tigers and Saints in the first several frames, Marshall was able to start connecting at the plate and spread the offensive energy for a three-run fifth inning to take the lead, which ultimately was enough to hang on.
“It wasn’t our best game by any means, but we still fought and fought our way back into a win,” Marshall’s Eli Weedman said. “We put the ball in play, made them [St. Peter] make plays. That’s kind of our motto — Put the ball in play, have a good at bats.”
Eli Alcorn had a strong performance on the mound, pitching a complete game with 10 strikeouts. He allowed just one walk, one earned run and three hits.
Offensively, Andrew Stelter led the Tigers with a pair of runs while going 2 for 3 at the plate. JR Vierstraete also had a team-high two RBIs.

Marshall embarked on its late rally in the bottom of the fifth to take its first lead of the night, 4-3.
Andrew Lee got the momentum going, scoring the first run on a Trae Bailey RBI line-drive single to left field. Lee initially reached base with a fly ball to the gap between second base and right field.
Notably, Bailey battled in the batter’s box and kept chipping away on foul balls until he connected to put the ball in play.
The Tigers got the bases loaded, and Vierstraete stepped up to the plate and grounded into a fielder’s choice that allowed Stelter to score from third base. The Saints committed an error on the play, which allowed Vierstraete to move to second and Weedman enough time to score and give Marshall the lead.
“Our energy and our attitude throughout the game,” Weedman said regarding what changed to swing Marshall’s momentum. “In the beginning, our energy was kind of flat. But, then we got the flock going in the dugout, and after that, that was the same inning where we scored the three runs and took the lead. So, I want to credit the flock and [assistant] coach [Paul] Blanchard for that one.”

Stelter first got on base with a walk, as did Weedman with a successful bunt that advanced all runners up to initially load the bases.
St. Peter got the final two outs with a pair of fly-ball catches to put a halt to Marshall’s rally.
“I think we just kept on building. It started with an Andrew Lee single, and then Andrew Stelter gets on, then I got the bunt and got on,” Weedman said. “Then, Trae Bailey with the hit to left to score a run, that was clutch, and it just kept on going.”
To start out the night, the Saints scored a pair of runs in the first inning to take a prompt 2-0 edge. They got bases loaded between two singles and a walk, and scored the first run on an infield sacrifice hit. The second came in the next at-bat on a passed ball.
After returning back to offense in the second frame following three quick outs, St. Peter added on one more run behind back-to-back fielding errors by Marshall, both being overthrows to first base.

St. Peter got a runner on third base as a result of the two errors, who scored on a sacrifice hit.
“I would say we just came together,” Weedman said regarding how the team recovered from their early errors. “We realized that, yeah, we made a couple of errors, but the game is still early. We still have five or six innings left to go,”
Marshall began to click on the defensive end come the top of the third. Stelter, at third base, made back-to-back plays by fielding a ground ball and throwing St. Peter out at first, paired with an Alcorn strikeout to return back to the plate.
The Tigers got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third to begin its comeback.
Stelter hit a leadoff single on a grounder to right field, and got into scoring position at third after stealing second and advancing a base on a sacrifice fly from Bailey. Stelter then scored with the help of a Vierstraete RBI single on a line drive to center field.

Although St. Peter continued to fight, Marshall held off the Saints defensively in the top of the sixth and seventh to hang on for the win and finish off the comeback. Alcorn tossed two more strikeouts along with Ethan Weedman catching a fly ball in center field in the seventh to end the game.
The Tigers finished with six hits and two errors, to the Saints’ three hits and two errors.
Marshall (13-2) will look to pick up its seventh-straight win when it hits the road to Tri-City United on Friday at 4 p.m. The Tigers will host a triangular on Saturday, where they will play Mankato East at noon and Montevideo at 4 p.m. at Legion Field.
