SMSU TENNIS: SMSU’s Flight named NSIC Tennis Player of the Week

BURNSVILLE — Southwest Minnesota State University senior Maegan Flight was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tennis Player of the Week for her performance this past week in two NSIC matches.

Flight, a native of Charleston, Ill., went 2-0 in doubles and 1-1 in singles during a split with NSIC champion Augustana University and the University of Sioux Falls.

In last Thursday’s match versus AU, Flight along with teammate Courtenay Leonard, earned a 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles over AU’s nationally-ranked doubles team. Flight and Leonard also picked up a 6-4 victory versus USF last Friday.

In No. 1 singles play, Flight dropped a hard-fought 6-1, 3-6, 0-1 (7-10) match to AU’s Valeriya Monko, before earning a straight set victory over USF last Friday.

Flight finished the NSIC season with a record of 9-1 in No. 1 singles play and recorded six victories in doubles play in conference play, including five at No. 1 doubles.

Flight is the second SMSU player to earn the NSIC weekly award this season. Maja Louisa Harck was named player of the week on Feb. 23.

Southwest Minnesota State, which finished the regular season with an 8-7 overall record and tied for third in the NSIC with an 8-3 record, will open play in the upcoming NSIC Tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D., today as the No. 5 seed and will take on No. 4 seed UMary at 4:30 p.m. SMSU’s third place finish in the conference standings is the program’s highest since placing second in 2008.
