SMSU BASEBALL: SMSU wins second straight behind Strommen’s career-high four hits

TUCSON, Ariz. — Southwest Minnesota State used a career-high four hits and three RBIs from Tanner Strommen, while Brodie Smith clubbed a home run, a double and two RBIs to earn a 12-6 victory over Waldorf University in college baseball on Tuesday morning at the Kino Sports Complex.

SMSU, now 6-5 overall, finished the game with 13 hits, while four Mustangs collecting multi-hit games. Strommen finished 4 for 5, Smith was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, while Brady Lanoue and Keenan Wenzel both added two hits apiece.

Spencer Rudnik (1-1) picked up the victory in relief, firing 4 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked a pair.

The Warriors scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the second with a lead-off triple and sac fly.

The Mustangs didn’t trail for long as Brodie Smith led off the top of the third with his first career home run to tie the game at 1-1.

Waldorf regained the lead with three singles to build a 2-1 advantage, but left the bases loaded as Jeremy Stouffer strikeout the final batter of the inning.

SMSU tied the game up once again in the fourth as Lanoue double and came around to score on a run-scoring single by Strommen.

WU regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of two walks to open the frame, before a two-run double cleared the bases and put the Warriors in front at 4-2 after four innings.

SMSU rallied in a big way in the fifth to take the lead. With one out, Christopher Berg walked and Wenzel reached on an error. Andy Andresen then singled to center to plate one run, before Lanoue drilled a two-run double to right field to put SMSU in the lead at 5-4. Strommen then added to the lead with an RBI single to push the margin to 6-4.

SMSU added to the lead taking advantage of a big two-out fielding error by WU. With two outs and runners on first and second, an error by the Warriors’ shortstop scored one run. After Lanoue was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Strommen smacked an RBI single to make the score 8-5.

The Mustangs put the game away in the ninth plating four runs on two hits. With one out, Robbie Smith was hit by a pitch and would come around to score one batter later as Brodie Smith ripped an RBI double. Logan Funk was then hit by a pitch and was followed by a walk to Berg to load the bases. Following a wild pitch to score a run, Wenzel hammered a two-run single to left to make the score 12-5.

Stouffer pitched four innings and allowed four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

Southwest Minnesota State will close out its Tucson trip today with an 11 a.m. CDT game versus Mayville State (N.D.).
