Girls Hockey

Marshall 3, Mankato East/

Loyola 3 (OT)

MANKATO – Trailing by a pair of goals, the Marshall girls hockey team were in need of a spark in the third period against Mankato East/Loyola on Saturday. The Tigers responded, scoring three goals in the final frame to force an overtime before Marshall and Mankato East finished in a 3-3 tie.

After the Cougars got a pair of goals from Madison Davis and Bri Adams in the first two periods to take a 2-0 lead, the Tigers were able to get on the board with 2:24 into the third on a power-play goal from Sydney Mauch to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Marshall then tied things up at 2-2 when Olivia Peterson got the assist from Mauch and Logan Sherman on the power play and put it in the back of the net, but Mankato East/Loyola answered with a second goal from Davis to take a 3-2 lead with just over four minutes left to play.

With under a minute to go, the Tigers needed to find a way to score if they were going to force an overtime period. Marshall would do just that, as Maddy Penske found Kaitlyn Timm, who put it in the back of the net with 50 seconds remaining to make it 3-3 and force an extra period of play.

Mankato East/Loyola outshot Marshall 39-36 on the game. Emma Klenken recorded 36 saves in net for Marshall.

Marshall will play in the Schwan’s Cup Tournament on Thursday in Blaine.
