Huso, O’Leary tie atop leaderboard as MCC edges Knights

Red Rock girls meet

SANBORN — The Murray County Central girls golf team claimed three of the top five places at the Red Rock Conference meet at Farmers Golf & Health Club on Thursday afternoon. The Rebels’ consistency atop the leaderboard helped the team to edge out Russell-Tyler-Ruthton by one stroke in the six-team event.

Atop the individual leaderboard, RTR’s Shae O’Leary and MCC’s Rachael Huso tied for first, each shooting a 91 on the day. Both golfers carded four pars on the day, with O’Leary scoring two on the front nine and two on the back and Huso recording all four of her pars on the back nine.

Teigyn O’Leary took third place for RTR with a score of 95 but Ava Johnson and Lizzie Daniels placed fourth and fifth for the Rebels with a 96 and 99 respectively to pull ahead. 

Izzy Thomas carded a 101 for RTR to slot herself sixth on the leaderboard but eighth grader Natalie Einck carded a 106 for the Rebels, tying RTR’s Jenna Gossen for ninth to seal the MCC victory.

MCC finished with a team score of 392, just ahead of RTR’s 393 mark. Mountain Lake placed third at 521 while Hills-Beaver Creek, Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda/Westbrook-Walnut Grove and Red Rock Central did not field a team score.

Marenna Bang led HLOF/WWG with a 107 to place 11th, just ahead of RTR’s Zoey Williams and RRC’s Aryanna Weber, who each shot a 111 to tie for 12th.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton will host the next Red Rock Conference girls meet on Tuesday, May 7. Tee times at Tyler Golf Club are slated for 2 p.m.

Red Rock boys meet

SLAYTON — Isaac Norgaard posted the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton boys golf team’s low score of the day, leading the Knights to a first-place finish at a Red Rock Conference meet at Slayton Country Club on Thursday afternoon.

Norgaard, an RTR senior, placed second overall in the meet with a score of 86, trailing only Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda/Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s Nathan Kueny at 80. Norgaard holed a birdie on hole 9 while Kueny had one on hole 17.

RTR finished the day with a team score of 377, edging past Mountain Lake by two strokes. HLOF/WWG placed fourth at 388, trailing Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton by eight strokes, while Murray County Central and Red Rock Central placed sixth and seventh at 361 and 425.

RTR’s Jonah Norgaard, MCC’s Lucas Kuball and RRC’s Gavin Willardson tied with Mountain Lake’s Maxton Fast for eighth in the meet with a score of 93. Colten Thomsen also placed 12th for the Knights at 94 while HLOF/WWG’s Kellen Hollahan and Ian Bumgardner placed 18th and 20th at 101 and 103 respectively.

Final scorecards for some MCC golfers were unavailable at the time of publication.

Mountain Lake will host the next Red Rock boys meet on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mountain Lake Golf Club.
