Saints give Marshall baseball first loss of season

Prep baseball roundup April 25, 2024

ST. PETER — A seventh-inning Saints rally was too much for the Marshall baseball team to overcome on Thursday night as St. Peter surged ahead for an 8-7 win over the Tigers. The loss was Marshall’s first of the season.

Marshall led 5-4 heading into the final inning and bolstered its lead in the top of the frame. Andrew Stelter walked, Braeden Myhre reached on an error and Talan Plante was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. A strikeout put one away but a Josh Kraft single scored one run and a Braxton Koster fielder’s choice drove in another. Kruse drew a walk with two outs but a pickoff ended the top half of the inning with Marshall holding a 7-4 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, however, St. Peter got a second wind. A hit batter and a Drew Simonette triple drove in one run. After a fielder’s choice got Simonette out at the plate, a walk and a strikeout put two down with the tying run at the plate.

St. Peter drew a walk to load the bases and a hit batter pushed in another run to make it 7-6 in favor of the Tigers. Another walk tied the game and the fourth walk of the inning sent home the game-winning run.

Marshall jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Josh Kraft drilled a two-run triple and Koster hit a sacrifice fly to make Marshall’s lead 3-0. They held that lead until the final two at-bats of the game.

Kraft and Plante each had a pair of hits for Marshall while Kraft and Koster led the team with three and two RBIs respectively.

Kraft started the game on the mound, allowing three earned runs on four hits and five walks over five innings. Ashton Blomberg pitched another 2/3 inning with one earned run, Myhre pitched 1 2/3 of relief while allowing three runs on one hit and a walk, while Koster recorded the loss after allowing one run in 1/3 innings pitched.

Game 2

Marshall 9, St. Peter 5

ST. PETER — After dropping the first game of its doubleheader, the Marshall baseball team came back with a vengeance in game 2 against St. Peter. The Tigers scored seven runs in the first three innings to pull away early for a 9-5 victory.

Talan Plante started the bottom of the first on a strong note for the Tigers, hitting a leadoff triple and scoring on a Stelter single. The Saints got out of the first without any further damage but were far from out of the wood.

Deagan Maurice reached base on an error with one out in the second inning. A Jude Knudson walk and a Brayden Ust bunt single loaded the bases when Plante hit a sacrifice fly to score another Tiger run. A Stelter single pushed in another and Ust went on to score on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0.

St. Peter responded with a run in the top of the third but the Tigers continued to pull away. Ust drove in a run on a bunt single, Knudson scored on a wild pitch and Koster drew a walk to force in a run for a 7-1 Tiger lead, the largest of the game.

The Saints scored exactly one run in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Yet, the Tigers’ early scoring remained enough to secure the win.

Eli Alcorn pitched the first 5 1/3 innings for Marshall, allowing one earned run and three unearned runs on three hits and three walks. He also struck out 10 of the 25 batters he faced.

Owen Kesteloot finished off the game with 1 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed one unearned run on one hit while striking out three batters.

Stelter, Maurice and Ust each had a pair of hits in the game while Maurice’s double and Plante’s triple were the only extra-base hits.

Maurice’s double came in the bottom of the sixth when he drove in Ashton Blomberg, who had just singled. Knudson hit another RBI single in the next at-bat to make the score 9-4.

Following the split, Marshall is now 6-1 on the season. They’ll look to return to their winning ways when they host Willmar on Monday at 4 p.m.

E/SWC 4, RTR 0

TYLER — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton baseball team couldn’t get anything going offensively on Thursday night. The Knights were limited to four hits on the day while Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian pulled away late for a 4-0 victory.

The Dutchmen first got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth inning and another pair in the sixth. RTR was never able to respond.

The Knights were held without a baserunner for the first four innings before Blake Christianson hit a single with two outs in the fourth. Brayden Chandler came in as a courtesy runner for the RTR catcher and advanced to second when Dawson Brust reached on an error, but a fly out prevented RTR from capitalizing on their first runner in scoring position.

Tyler Wichmann was the only Knight to reach third base on the day, hitting a triple with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Still, a strikeout ended the game before the Knights could push him home.

IN addition to Wichmann and Blake Christianson, Chase Christianson and Gabe Elton each also singled for the Knights. No RTR players drew a walk.

Eli Determan recorded the loss despite a solid pitching performance. He threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Elton closed out the game with 1 2/3 innings on the hill, allowing one unearned run on three walks, a hit and four strikeouts.
