SMSU VOLLEYBALL: Mustangs earn second straight conference victory over UMary
MARSHALL – The Southwest Minnesota State women’s volleyball team extended its two-match winning streak with a sweep over Minot State (25-22, 25-15, 25-18) on Saturday afternoon.
SMSU improves to 15-7 overall and 10-4 in the conference while UMary drops its 18th consecutive match at 3-19 overall and 0-14 in the NSIC.
Taylor Reiss led the Mustangs with 23 kills and 14 digs, her 16th double-double of the season. Sarina Smith added 10 kills with a .409 hitting percentage. Kaylee Burmeister led the Mustang with 23 digs.
UMary earned a lead early on and maintained the lead until the Mustangs went on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 21-21 and even further to take a 22-21 lead with a kill from Sydney Omtvedt. The Marauders tied the set back at 22-22 before they committed two errors and a kill from Reiss ended the set, 25-22.
The Mustangs went on another 5-0 early on in the second set to go up 6-2. The Mustangs were able to string maintain the lead throughout, despite the Marauders attempt to rally with a 4-0 run to close in on the Mustangs 19-15. The Mustangs responded with a 6-0 run to close out the set, 25-15 with a kill from Smith.
Despite an early tie at 1-1, the Mustangs maintained the lead throughout set three to win the match 25-18. The Mustangs earned their largest lead with a 6-0 run to go up 21-13. UMary took advantage of three Mustang errors and a kill to close to deficit to 21-17 before Reiss earned two kills, a service ace, and a UMary error ended the match.
The Mustangs return home for conference play on Friday to host four-consecutive matches. The homestand kicks off with MSU Moorhead on Friday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. in the PE Gym for the annual red out match.
