MARSHALL ­- Southwest Minnesota State (5-4, 1-2 NSIC) racked up three pins as SMSU throttled Northern State (1-8, 0-2 NSIC), 37-6 on Friday night the PE Gym for its first conference win of the 2017-18 season.

Taylor Curtis (125) got SMSU off to a strong start for a second straight dual with a 15-4 major decision at 125. Brock Buysse (133) earned a win by fall at 3:47 and Justin Haneke (149) grabbed his eighth pin of the year at 2:21 to put SMSU ahead 16-3.

Cortez Arredondo (157) grabbed his second win of the week with a tight 3-2 decision and Kegen Fingalsen (165) received a win by forfeit which but the Mustangs ahead 25-3.

Cole Hennen (184) and Jack Ryan (197) both fought their way to close victories and Andrew Petersen (285) capped off the night with the quickest pin of the dual, winning by fall at 1:28 to give the Mustangs the 37-3 win.

Southwest Minnesota State will now host Dakota-Wesleyan in a nonconference dual on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., in the PE Gym.

THURSDAY

Augustana 27, SMSU 9

MARSHALL – Taylor Curtis got the night started off with a win by a 5-3 decision for Southwest Minnesota State, but SMSU was only able to put together two more decisions as Augustana pulled away to a 27-9 win on Thursday night.

SMSU (4-4, 0-2 NSIC) returns to NSIC competition after going 3-1 in the Augustana Duals and 1-1 in the Maverick Duals against nonconference opponents.

Following Curtis’s 5-3 decision to lead off the night, SMSU dropped the next three bouts to fall behind 11-3. Cortez Arredondo won a 5-3 decision at 157 for SMSU but Augustana then won another four straight bouts to go ahead 27-6.

Andrew Petersen won 6-4 decision at 285 as Augustana’s win moves the Vikings (RV) to 7-2 overall and 2-0 on their conference schedule.

SMSU will turn around to compete in less than 24 hours as they facce Northern State on Friday night at 7 p.m., in the first home dual of the year for the Mustangs in the PE Gym.
