MINNEOTA – The only thing that could cool down Preston Nuy was the post-game ice-water shower that he received from his teammates. The hurler through five scoreless innings for the Minneota Legion baseball team and led his squad to a 5-0 victory over Montevideo on Thursday night.

“It helps when the pitcher throws a lot of strikes. He did a great job tonight. It was his first start this summer,” said Minneota coach Keven Larson “We were expecting maybe two, maybe three innings and then we had a couple other guys that could come in, but he didn’t throw a lot of pitches and the defense made the routine plays.”

Nuy said he didn’t feel rusty after a few weeks off from pitching. He kept things simple on the mound. “Fastball mostly, when I was up I used curveball and got them a couple times,” he said.

After a one-two-three inning to open up the game, Minneota got into scoring position quickly after Brock Buysse hit a double during Minneota’s first at-bat. Jordan Beck drove Buysse home with a double himself.

Alex Guttormsson ripped the third two-bagger of the inning a batter later to drive in Beck and put Minneota up 2-0

“We hit the ball on the line for the most part which was nice to see. We didn’t see that the first game for sure,” said Nelson.

After the middle innings that featured few hits, Minneota recorded five more hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Beck drove in Buysse again with his second double of the game. Guttormsson then drove in Buysse again to put his team up 4-0.

Beck hit his third RBI of the game with a single in the sixth inning to drive in Henry Pesch. He also relieved Nuy in the fifth inning and did not give up run in his two innings of work.

Minneota is now 2-1. They host Granite Falls for a 7 p.m. game on Monday.
