Endorsing Gaul for District 15 Senate seat

To the editor: I am writing this letter to express my strong endorsement of Anita Gaul for Minnesota District 15’s Senate seat. In the years I’ve worked with her, I’ve found her to be a reasonable, enlightened colleague and a thoughtful, honest person. As an instructor, Anita is busy but – as all good instructors do – she makes time for her students because she legitimately cares about them and their futures. While this experience may not initially appear to be a notable qualification for a senator, it is a good reason Anita is the top choice to be your representative. ...

Ellison fighting for farmers

To The Editor: I attended a meeting with Attorney General Keith Ellison that was hosted in Marshall at the end of August. Along with 70 other people from SW Minnesota, I heard the Attorney General respond to questions from the crowd for a good hour or more – people raising up the issues that they face in their lives. He then stayed for another 45 minutes talking with people one-to-one or at their tables. Ellison impressed me because he would ask questions to learn more, listen, and then respond in a very straightforward way, over a wide range of issues. He didn’t promise the ...

Driveway is not a turnaround place

To the editor: I’ve talked about writing a letter to the editor for awhile and tonight I was upset enough to write it. If it sounds a little emotional, it’s because I felt helpless watching. We live on Highway 19 west and with the detour on Highway 68, traffic on our road has increased greatly. As you drive toward our farm site, we are the last place on the north side of the road before the first hill. Our place has a farm driveway and our acreage driveway. People have used our driveway as a turnaround place, meeting place, park on our lawn, etc. for years, but with this ...

Principles of good government ignored

To the editor: We seem to continue to elect people that don’t understand the principles of good government as our Founders provided in our Constitution. Those principles apply to every aspect whether it be in our lives or the government. These principles have been ignored for far too long and they need to be resurrected and the only way to do that is through education. We have been poor stewards in the maintenance of these principles when it comes to the people we elect. We apply them to our individual lives, but we don’t apply them to the people that we elect. The people we ...

What I was taught

To the Editor: I unexpectedly awoke at 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Strangely, I began to think of my life, my family, and America’s current political division. Now wide awake, I grabbed my smartphone and began listing what I had been taught 70 years ago by my parents, teachers and the good people of southwest Minnesota. I was taught the following: My country and my family are everything. Living in America is a blessing. Be kind and respectful to all. Policemen and soldiers are our friends. Work brings dignity. Without laws and boundaries, we have only chaos and ...

Environmentalism adding to ‘global warming’

To the editor: The 8-13-2022 ‘Competition and choice’ expresses disapproval of Gov. Walz’s mandate that would reduce transportation greenhouse gases by 30% by 2025 and 80% by 2050. However, nothing is said as to how much reduction in atmospheric CO2. these mandates will produce. There are about 2 million registered cars in Minnesota. The average car emits about 4.6 tons of CO2 per year. So Minn. cars emit roughly 10 million tons per year. Replacing all those cars with electric powered units would be totally worthless for controlling global warming. In my 5-20-2022 letter ...
