Don’t worry about outcome of vote

THUMBS DOWN:

Apparently Tuesday’s scheduled vote on a recycling contract with Southwest Sanitation to provide curbside recycling pickup in Lyon County is a foregone conclusion. Lyon County mailed informational flyers to residents this week providing the start date and pickup dates for the every other week curbside recycling program. Oh well, because of conflict of interest issues, only three of the five commissioners will vote on the contract.

Prime example of vitality

THUMBS UP:

Tyler resident D.C. Pinckney is the talk of the town. The spry-looking centenarian featured on the Independent’s Oct. 15 front page sparked a lot of discussion and envy over how young he looks for being 100.

Nation loses civil rights icon

THUMBS SIDEWAYS:

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz ordered all U.S. and Minnesota flags to be flown at half-mast after Thursday’s announcement of Congressman Elijah Cummings’ death. As Walz mentioned, Cummings was “tirelessly dedicated to serving his community in Baltimore and advocating for civil rights.” Rest in peace Rep. Cummings.

Putting drones to work for rescues

THUMBS UP:

Great news out of Sherburne County that the missing 6-year-old boy was found Tuesday afternoon after a frantic search by hundreds of volunteers. One particular volunteer bought his drone with him. The drone was equipped with heat-seeking technology and ended up leading a search team right to the boy. After witnessing such positive results, a Sherburne County spokesman said the Sheriff’s Department now plans to purchase a drone. Wouldn’t be surprising if more law enforcement agencies follow their lead.
