Filing for state, county offices open through June 2
MARSHALL — The candidate filing period opens this week in Minnesota for national, state, county and some local offices. In Lyon County, the list of races includes U.S. Congressional and state Legislature seats, Minnesota state offices, county commissioner seats, and county offices like the Lyon County Sheriff and County Attorney. The filing period for those offices is May 19 through June 2.
The filing period for some elections that do not hold primaries, including city council and school board races, will open July 14.
The candidate filing period for several national and Minnesota state races starts May 19. At the national level, Minnesotans will be electing members to the U.S. House of Representatives, and one Senator. State offices up for election this year include Minnesota Governor and Lieutenant Governor, and state constitutional offices like Minnesota Attorney General, State Auditor, and Secretary of State.
Candidacy filing opens also May 19 for area state Legislature seats. The list of state House and Senate seats up for election in southwest Minnesota includes House Districts 15A and 15B, House Districts 21A and 21B, Senate District 15 and Senate District 21. Several current Minnesota Senators and Representatives have said they will not seek re-election this year, including Rep. Chris Swedzinski in District 15A, Rep. Steve Torkelson in District 15B, Rep. Joe Schomacker in District 21A, Sen. Gary Dahms in District 15, and Sen. Bill Weber in District 21.
The filing period for Minnesota state judicial offices will also be May 19 – June 2, the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office said.
Some local offices also have candidate filing periods opening May 19. Two Lyon County Commissioners have terms that expire in 2026. Thomas Andries’ seat in Commissioner District 1, and Paul Graupmann’s seat in Commissioner District 3, will be up for election in the fall. The offices of Lyon County Sheriff and Lyon county Attorney are also up for election.
In Lyon County, there will also be two Soil and Water Supervisor seats up for election, in Districts 2 and 4.
The candidate filing period for races that do not hold primary elections will be July 14-28, the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office said. That includes township offices, and some city and school board elections. In the city of Marshall, filing for open Marshall City Council and school board seats will start July 14.
There will be a total of four city council seats up for election this fall, the Marshall City Clerk said. One seat each will be up for election in Marshall’s Ward 1, Ward 2, and Ward 3. A special election in Ward 2 will also be held to fill the vacancy left when council member Amanda Schwartz stepped down from her position.
At Marshall Public Schools, there will be a total of three school board seats up for election. School board member Sara Brink said she plans to run for re-election, while board members Sara Runchey and Jeff Chapman have decided not to run for re-election.
