Student struck by vehicle at Main St. crossing
MARSHALL — A middle school student was struck by a vehicle at a pedestrian crossing at the intersection of East Main Street and A Street, Marshall Police and Marshall Public Schools officials confirmed Thursday morning.
Marshall Police Chief Jim Marshall and MPS Superintendent Jeremy Williams said the student was taken to Avera Marshall Hospital for evaluation.
They urged drivers to be more mindful of pedestrians using crosswalks.
“Crosswalks exist to provide a safe place for our citizens and children to cross the street, yet too often drivers fail to slow down, or notice those who are attempting to cross the road,” Marshall said in a public advisory issued Thursday.
“We need drivers to be extra vigilant,” especially with good weather returning and street construction changing traffic flows in Marshall, Williams said.
Marshall said the collision was reported around 7:46 a.m., at the intersection of East Main Street and A Street. While there are no crossing guards stationed at that intersection, there is a there is a crosswalk on Main Street, with a flashing pedestrian beacon.
Williams confirmed Thursday that a Marshall Middle School student was injured in the collision. He said the student was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Williams said he had heard that the student was doing well.
Marshall said the incident was still under investigation.
Officials emphasized the need for members of the public to pay attention to crosswalks. Williams said MPS will also continue to work to educate students about crossing safety, and encourage children going to school to cross the street at pedestrian crossings, or crossings where there are crossing guards.
“As traffic patterns change in our community due to construction, please remember to approach crosswalks with caution. Slow down, stay alert, and always yield to pedestrians,” Marshall said in the public advisory.
Thursday’s collision came as work gets underway for reconstruction of Minnesota Highway 19 (East College Drive) this year. Work crews began removing asphalt from College Drive between Main Street and West Marshall Street on Wednesday. During this segment of construction, College Drive will be closed to traffic between Main Street and Third Street.
A detour of Highway 19 will be in place during construction, directing traffic onto County Road 7 and Highway 23.
During a Highway 19 update meeting Thursday, representatives of R and G Construction said drivers should also be aware of traffic signal work coming on Tuesday, at the intersection of College drive and Saratoga Street. Drivers may encounter delays or active work crews in that area Tuesday.
