Ready for tricks and treats

Area Halloween events kick off this weekend

Some Marshall residents and businesses have gone all-out on decorating for Halloween. A witch on a bicycle was part of the display outside one house on East Main Street Wednesday.

MARSHALL — The weather might be turning chilly, but there are still plenty of Halloween-themed events for kids and families starting up this weekend. In Marshall, trick-or-treating at downtown businesses is still on for Saturday afternoon, the Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce said.

Chamber events coordinator Mavi Valentin said local businesses had been stopping by the office to pick up fliers indicating they are trick-or-treat stops.

“I believe it’s been about the same as last year,” Valentin said of participation.

Downtown trick-or-treating will be from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday. At the same time, the Lyon County Museum will also be hosting a Halloween family fun day, with activities like a pumpkin scavenger hunt. Children dressed in costume will also receive treat bags. The family fun day runs from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

From 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, kids and families are encouraged to visit Southwest Minnesota State University’s residence halls for the annual ResHALLoween. The event includes games, candy and crafts for children in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. Check-in for ResHALLoween will be at the Commons Central building, located across from the Campus Religious Center. Admission is $1 or one non-perishable food item per person.

Proceeds from ResHALLoween are donated to local food banks.

More Halloween fun events will be going on at SMSU on Sunday. At 2 p.m., the SMSU Planetarium will host “Spooky Space,” a planetarium show about Halloween’s cosmic connections. The show also includes the “Fright Light” light show. Afterward, students in the SMSU Chemistry Club will hold a slime-making activity for kids.

Admission for the planetarium show is $5 at the door. Guest are encouraged to arrive early. Once the show begins, the doors close and no entry is permitted.
