Hadley 14, Worthington 3
WORTHINGTON — Derek Kluis drove in four runs on three hits while Tucker Sorenson threw six innings to earn a win for the Hadley Buttermakers in their game against the Worthington Cubs in Gopher League play on Sunday. The game was scoreless for the first three innings, but Hadley slowly pulled away from there, with a four-run sixth inning and a five-run ninth inning propelling the Buttermakers to a 14-3 win.
Kluis finished the day with a single, a triple and a stolen base while Dylan Kluis racked up three singles and a double at the plate. Jakob Olson, Max Zwart and Mike Preuss each also finished with a double, along with two singles for Olson and one single for Zwart and Preuss.
Sorenson struck out 12 batters while walking two in his mound appearance, giving up three earned runs on seven hits.
Owen Gillette, Lincoln Swanjurd and Avery Weber each also pitched a no-hit inning of relief to keep the Cubs off the scoreboard, with the only runners coming on a pair of Gillette walks.
Hadley took the lead in the fourth inning with one run and added two more in the fifth and another four in the top of the sixth. The Cubs answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame, but Hadley closed out the win with near-perfect relief pitching and additional runs support in the eighth and ninth innings.
Hadley improves to 6-3 on the season and next goes on the road to take on the Milroy Yankees (2-7) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Yankee Field.
Minneota 5, Chokio 4
CHOKIO — Facing a one-run deficit heading into the final frame, the Minneota Mudhens rallied late to pick up a 5-4 Land O’ Ducks win over Chokio on Saturday. The Mudhens showed off their plate discipline with four walks to force in a pair of runs in the ninth and claim the win.
AJ Myhre started off the Minneota rally by getting hit by the first pitch of the inning and Ryan Dalager and Brock Buysse followed up with a pair of walks to load the bases. The Coyotes got a strikeout to put one away, but another pair of walks to Easton Greenwood and Jackson Lacek forced in the tying and go-ahead runs before a strikeout and fielder’s choice ended the frame.
Chokio loaded the bases with two outs with a walk, a Minneota error and a single. Yet, Dalager got three strikeouts in the inning to overcome the fielding miscue and escape the inning with the lead intact to secure the win.
Dalager pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for the Mudhens, holding the Coyotes scoreless while striking out five batters. He gave up one hit and one walk during the mound appearance.
Adam Dalager got the start for Minneota, giving up two earned runs on two hits and four walks over four innings. Brody Larson also struck out six batters over 3 1/3 innings of relief, giving up two earned runs on two hits and three walks.
After Brock Buysse singled in Myhre in the top of the seventh to give Minneota the lead, Chokio took it right back in the bottom of the frame on a two-run double from Parker Dierks.
Ryan Dalager and Greenwood led the Minneota batters with three hits and a walk each. The Mudhens did not record an extra-base hit on the day, but finished with 11 hits to Chokio’s five.
Minneota got on the board in the top of the first with an RBI single from Ryan Dalager to score Peyton Gillund, but Chokio answered in the bottom of the frame with a run on a wild pitch to tie up the game.
Chandler Erickson got the start for the Coyotes, giving up a pair of earned runs on nine hits and a walk. Jeremy Westman also gave up one earned run on two hits and two walks over two innings of relief, while Marshall Tolifson gave up two earned runs on two walks without recording an out to get tagged for the loss.
Brock Buysse scored Austin Buysse on a third-inning sacrifice fly, but Chokio again tied the game in the fourth on a line-drive RBI single.
Minneota improves to 4-1 on the year with the win and hosts the Hancock Orphans for its next game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at K.P. Kompelien Field.
Dumont 12, Dawson 8
DAWSON — Early defensive struggles outweighed the Dawson Drakes’ late-game hitting in their Land O’ Ducks matchup against the Dumont Saints on Saturday. The Saints built a 9-0 lead through the first four innings and, while the Drakes put together quality at-bats and improved pitching and defense from there, it wasn’t enough as the Saints held on for a 12-8 win.
The Saints plated a pair of unearned runs with two outs in the first to take the lead. A hit batter and two walks loaded the bases to set the stage for a four-run second inning, and Dumont added another run in the third and two more in the fourth to take a commanding early lead.
Dawson got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with five runs to make a game out of things. Tygan Long and Collin Olson walked consecutively to start the inning before an RBI double from Beau Johnson and a two-run double from Kameron Sather put the team on the board.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Derek Gritmacker hit another two-run double to cut the Dumont lead down to 9-5.
Johnson finished the game with three hits and an RBI to lead the Dawson batters, while Gritmacker drove in two runs on a pair of hits.
Blake Thompson took the loss for the Drakes on the mound, surrendering four earned and two unearned runs on one hit with three walks. Braxton Thompson gave up another three earned runs on four hits over 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Gritmacker also pitched three innings of relief for Dawson, surrendering one earned run on one hit with a team-high four strikeouts. Long also gave up a pair of unearned runs on two hits and two walks over two innings.
Dumont got a run back in the sixth, but Dawson got back within striking distance on a Blake Thompson RBI single in the eighth.
After the Saints scored two runs in the top of the ninth, consecutive singles from Gritmacker, Braxton Thompson and Long loaded the bases with no outs. Olson drove in one run when he grounded into a double play and Thompson scored on a wild pitch, but a pop out ended the game.
Dawson falls to 1-3 on the season and next hosts the Castlewood Ravens on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Milroy Irish 13,
Lakefield 0 (7 inn.)
LAKEFIELD — Trevor Smith pitched a complete-game shutout while Tyler Maeyaert racked up five RBIs on two doubles, a single and a walk for the Milroy Irish on Sunday in their Gopher League matchup against Lakefield. The Irish jumped ahead in the third inning and never looked back, claiming a 13-0 win in seven innings.
Smith struck out 10 batters while walking one during his time on the mound, limiting Lakefield to three hits and a walk. The result gives him his first win of the season on the hill.
The Irish first took the lead on a two-run double from Maeyaert and a sacrifice fly from Andrew Wallen in the third. Maeyaert also hit an RBI single in the fourth after Dominic Dolan doubled, and Levi Maeyaert hit a two-run single with two outs to bring the Irish lead to 6-0.
Derek Smith finished with a game-high four hits, with a double and three RBIs, while Dolan also drove in a run on two singles and a double.
A Dolan RBI single and a Tyler Maeyaert RBI double in the sixth brought Milroy to the cusp of the mercy rule.
Milroy got over the brink with five runs in the seventh. With two outs and the bases loaded, Jacob Dykes and Tyler Maeyert walked consecutively and Smith hit a three-run double to make the score 13-0.
Milroy Irish 6, Jackson 4
JACKSON — Clutch at-bats from Dominic Dolan and Derek Smith helped the Milroy Irish take an eighth-inning lead in their game against Jackson on Sunday. The game was tied heading into the penultimate frame, but the Irish stepped up when it mattered most to claim a 6-4 win.
With the score knotted up at four runs apiece heading into the eighth, Anthony Dolan walked and Moses singled to put runners on first and second. Dominic Dolan reached on an error to drive in the go-ahead run and Smith singled in Moses Dolan for a 6-4 Irish lead.
A single and a walk brought the go-ahead run to the plate for the Bulls, but Smith got a strikeout, a lineout and a fielder’s choice to escape the jam and seal the win.
Smith finished the game with three hits, including a double, while Tyler Peterson added a pair of singles and a pair of RBIs at the plate. Smith also got the save on the mound while Peterson got the win after pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk.
Connor Lanoue and Craig Lasley each gave up two earned runs on the mound for Milroy. Lanoue gave up one hit and two walks over three innings while Lasley allowed four hits and a walk over 2 1/3.
Milroy scored the tying run in the top of the seventh when Tyler Maeyaert walked and Smith doubled. Peterson then grounded out to score Maeyaert, knotting up the score at four runs apiece.
Jackson scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first, but the Irish tied it back up in the top of the fourth when Peterson singled, Tyler Patterson reached on an error and Levi Maeyaert walked before Jacob Dykes drove in Peterson on a ground out. Still, the Bulls got a strikeout and a ground out to escape the jam without further damage and regained the lead on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
A Tyler Maeyaert walk and a Smith single set the table for a Peterson sacrifice fly and a passed ball to score the go-ahead run for Milroy, but the Bulls again went ahead with one run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.
Milroy improves to 7-2 on the year with the win and goes on the road to take on Brookings in its next game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
