Vierstraete’s six RBIs power Marshall past Worthington

WORTHINGTON — JR Vierstraete drove in six runs on three hits, including a three-run homer, for the Marshall baseball team on Tuesday against Worthington. The Tigers rode that momentum to a quick win over the Trojans, coming away with a 12-2 win in five innings in Big South Conference play.
Vierstraete’s homer came in the top of the third. Coming to bat after Andrew Stelter was hit by a pitch (for the 10th time in the team’s first 11 games) and Trae Bailey walked, Vierstraete blasted the third pitch of his at-bat over the left-field wall, bringing Marshall’s lead to 5-0.
The Tigers finished the day with eight hits as a team, with Vierstraete’s homer and and Keynan Coequyt’s double giving the Tigers a pair of extra-base hits. Bailey and Eli Weedman each also reached base twice with a single and a walk.
Marshall threw a different pitcher on the mound each inning of the win. Andrew Lee, Tyler Kraft and Noah Pieper each threw a scoreless inning to start the game, and Noah Frazee and Clayton Jones each gave up one unearned run in the final two frames. Pieper led the team with three strikeouts, giving up one hit, while Kraft and Lee each struck out another pair of batters.
Eli Weedman singled before being replaced by Trae Bailey on first on a fielder’s choice, and Vierstraete singled in Bailey for the game’s first run. The Tigers added another run in the second when Chase Alcorn singled, stole second and third, and scored on a Kraft sacrifice fly.
Leading 5-0, Marshall pulled away with a four-run fourth inning.Walks to Alcorn and Ethan Weedman and a Stelter fielder’s choice put runners on the corners with two outs, but Kraft scored on a wild pitch to start the rally and Eli Weedman walked before Bailey hit an RBI single. Another two runs scored on a Vierstraete single to bring the score to 9-0.
Worthington scored a run in the bottom of the frame, leaving Marshall two runs shy of triggering the mercy rule in the fifth. They got those runs when Eli Alcorn singled before scoring on a wild pitch, Bailey walked before scoring on an Ethan Boeck single, and Stelter reached on an error before scoring on Coequyt’s double.
Worthington scored on an error with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but Jones retired the final batter to seal the win.
Marshall improves to 9-2 and next goes on the road for a doubleheader against Waseca, Saturday at noon.

YME 12, RRC/WWG 6
LAMBERTON — Despite trailing by as many as four runs, the Yellow Medicine East baseball team rallied late to pick up a non-conference win over Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Tuesday. The Sting took their first lead of the day in the sixth inning and held on from there for a 12-6 win.
Tied at five runs apiece, Caysen Lien singled, Aaden Kuehn walked and Calen Almich reached on an error to load the bases with one out. Drew Monson hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the go-ahead run and Hayden Kuehn reached base on an error to give YME an extra run of cushion.
Marshal Willhite walked before scoring on a Braxton Weber ground out in the bottom of the frame, cutting the deficit in half. Yet, YME responded with five runs in the seventh to put the game to bed.
Lane Wohlman walked and Gavin Torvik singled to start the rally, and a passed ball scored Wohlman. After Lien was hit by a pitch, Torvik scored on an error as Lien tried to steal second and Dane Hildahl walked to put yet another runner on base. Another wild pitch and an Almich ground out each plated another run, and Drew Monson doubled before scoring on a wild pitch to bring the score to 12-6.
Torvik led YME’s bats with a triple and a single, and Wohlman added two singles and a walk. Torvik also earned the win on the mound after holding RRC/WWG to one earned run with six strikeouts over three innings of relief.
Liam Anderson got the start for the Sting, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks over four innings.
The Falcons built up their early lead when a four-run fourth inning turned the tide.
Consecutive singles by Weber, Jackson Jenniges and Erickson pushed across one run, and a walk to Colton Schaffran loaded the bases.
Trenton Blomgren kept the rally going with an RBI single, and a Carter Therkilsen RBI single and a Willhite ground out brought the score to 5-1.
Weber scored the game’s first run when he reached on an error and scored on a Jake Erickson single, but YME answered in the second when Torvik tripled and scored on a Lien ground out.
Jenniges was charged with the loss for RRC/WWG, giving up one earned and six unearned runs on five hits and a walk over 5 1/3 innings. Jordan Therkilsen Jordan Therkilsen and Trigg Herding each got two outs in relief, Therkilsen giving up three earned runs and Herding surrendering a pair.
Jenniges also led RRC/WWG offensively with a double and two singles. Erickson singled twice and Blomgren and Jonah Skarupa each walked twice.
Gunnar Fagen reached base on an error and scored on a Lien ground out in the fourth to get the comeback started, and YME tacked on another three runs in the fifth to tie the game.
Kuehn and Monson each reached on errors to put runners on first and second with one out in the frame. After a passed ball put the two in scoring position, Fagen hit a two-run single and then scored when RRC/WWG committed an error on a Wohlman single.
YME improves to 4-4 and next goes on the road to take on Ortonville on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., and RRC/WWG falls to 3-5 and hosts Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

TMB vs. MCC
MILROY — Carson Lewis’ three RBIs set the tone for the Murray County Central baseball team in its Tuesday non-conference matchup against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton. Lewis came up clutch for the Rebels in the third inning of the battle at Yankee Field, helping propel the Rebels to a 6-2 win.
MCC got all the offense it needed in the third inning. Locked in a scoreless tie, Gabe Tentinger walked and Tristan Behrends singled with two outs to put runners on first and second.
A balk advanced them both into scoring position before Dugan reached on an error to drive in one run, and Krew Schneider reached on another error to put runners back on the corners. From there, Lewis capitalized with a two-run single to bring the score to 4-0.
Lewis was one of two Rebels to finish with multiple hits on the day, along with Behrends, while MCC finished with seven as a team.
TMB was limited to two hits in the game, one from Connor Lanoue and one from David Schuh.
Schneider picked up the pitching win for MCC, giving up two unearned runs on one hit and four walks over 6 2/3 innings. He also fanned eight batters. In relief, Kluis gave up one hit while getting one out.
The Rebels added another pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Teague Meyer reached on an error and Kluis walked, putting runners on the corners, and a pair of RBI singles from Schneider and Lewis gave MCC a six-run cushion.
Carson Lanoue was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth, and Brody Marron walked and Taylor Squires bunted and reached on an error to load the bases for the Panthers with no outs. Connor Lanoue drove in Carson on a fielder’s choice, but a pop out and a strikeout limited the damage for MCC.
Squires was hit by a pitch and scored when Connor Lanoue reached on an error in the seventh. Another MCC error put runners on first and second with two outs, but Kluis got a ground out to end the game.
Lanoue pitched all seven innings for TMB in the loss, surrendering one earned and five unearned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks.
MCC remains undefeated at 9-0 and hosts Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
TMB falls to 2-5 and looks to bounce back when it hosts Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

NEW ULM — The Wabasso baseball team couldn’t quite get its offense going in the first of a doubleheader against New Ulm Cathedral Tuesday night, falling 15-0 in mercy-rule.
NUC was quick to get to action with five runs in the first inning, and continued to chip away from there. The Greyhouds scored two runs over the next two frames, and capped off the night early with a dominant six-run fourth inning while holding the Rabbits scoreless.
The Greyhounds had a 15-3 hitting advantage over Wabasso.
Zach Skoblik pitched the first three innings, and finished his time with one strikeouts while allowing five walks, nine hits and eight earned runs. Brady Baunce relieved for the final two outs, also tossing a strikeout with one hit.
Wabasso moves to 2-8 on the season, and will look to get back on track when it returns home to host Sleepy Eye today at 4:30 p.m.

NEW ULM — Although the Wabasso baseball team was able to slow down New Ulm Cathedral’s offense a bit more in the second of a doubleheader Tuesday night, the Rabbits ultimately weren’t able to get runs across in a 6-0 loss.
Jack Burns pitched a complete game and held the Greyhounds scoreless for four innings, and finished the night with four strikeouts, allowing no walks.
NUC scored once in the opening inning and added another three in the second, and hung onto its lead with two more in the top of the sixth.
Wabasso struggled with errors, finishing with four to its three hits. NUC finished the game with two errors and seven hits.
Drew Kemp led the Rabbits off with a double along with a stolen base.
Wabasso moves to 2-8 on the season, and will look to get back on track when it returns home to host Sleepy Eye today at 4:30 p.m.
