Vikings, Knights, Chargers earn sweeps

No. 5 Minneota 3, YME 0 

GRANITE FALLS — The No. 5 Minneota Vikings defeated the Yellow Medicine East Sting Tuesday night in three sets. 

The Sting came out aggressive and stayed close to the Sting in the first set, but fell just short 25-19. The following two sets were in the control of Minneota, with scores on 25-6 and 25-9. 

YME entered the night coming off of two wins at a weekend tournament in Marshall. 

Elivia Faris and Eden Meagher led the team with 10 kills each, while Leah Coequyt added in eight, and Sarah Gruenes and Jaylen Coequyt tallied seven apiece. 

Libby Sussner and Nevaeh Hennen found their offense through the night, with 21 and 15 set assists respectively. 

Grunes had a team-high three blocks, and Hennen had a pair of service aces. 

Autumn Anderson and Abby Rolbiecki managed the back row, with 12 and 11 digs. Madison Minnehan also finished with eight. 

Minneota moves to 16-7 overall and will next travel to Renville County West on Thursday. YME, 7-16, will go to Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Thursday. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. 

No. 2 RTR 3, MCC 0

SLAYTON — A well-balanced effort from the No. 2 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton volleyball team’s defensive back row led the Knights to a 25-15, 25-16, 25-16 sweep of Murray County Central in the Rebels’ home finale on Tuesday night.

Libero Avery Schreurs led the Knights with 17 digs while Brezlyn Buchert and Sara Thooft each tallied another 14. Buchert also finished with 33 set assists and a pair of blocks in the match while Schreurs contributed five assists and the team’s lone service ace.

MCC finished the match with five aces, including one each from Emmi Peltola, Ava Deacon, Peyton DeGreef, Kelli Miller and Reese Gilbertson.

Peltola led all players in the match with 20 digs on the night while Kate Blankenship contributed another 11 for MCC. Deacon and Miller each also tallied seven digs. 

Ava Karbo led the Knights with four blocks in the match while Guida added another two. Dilyn Werkman and Paisley and Sara Thooft each also had a block.

Thooft’s 15 kills were a match-high, followed by Werkman’s nine and Karbo’s eight.

DeGreef and Gilbertson contributed three and two blocks in the defensive front row for MCC.

Miller recorded seven set assists for MCC while Schneider led the team in kills with five.

MCC falls to 9-12 with the loss while RTR improves to 20-7. The Rebels will head to Adrian for a matchup against Adrian-Ellsworth (8-8) on Monday to conclude the regular season. The Knights will host No. 6 Canby (16-5) and Red Rock Central (7-12) on Monday and Tuesday to wrap up the regular season with a two-match homestand.

WWG 3, RRC 0 

LAMBERTON — Keeping its control the entire night, Westbrook-Walnut Grove swept Red Rock Central Tuesday evening in sets of 25-11, 25-12 and 25-16. 

Natalie Wahl and Ambrosa Yang each had four service aces for WWG, to get its good offensive momentum going. Wahl also had 13 kills, followed by Carlie Ross with 10 kills and eight digs. 

Hadley Jenniges logged 37 set assists on the night for the Chargers. 

For RRC, Tia Donkersloot had three blocks and nine kills, while Ally Linder also tallied another five kills. Natasha Erickson had a team-high 13 assists, while Maia Scheffler and Keena Kosel managed the defense with seven and six digs respectively. 

Sky Hagert and Ally Linder each finished with a pair of blocks as well. 

WWG, 18-4, will next return home to host Pipestone Area on Thursday at 7 p.m. RRC, 8-12, will look to get back in the win column also on Thursday at 7 p.m. when it travels to take on No. 2 Russell-Tyler-Ruthon in its final regular season match.
