MARSHALL — The Marshall A’s were able to get 14 batters an opportunity at the plate and four pitchers a chance on the mound on Wednesday night, giving a wide variety of players opportunities in their 10-2 win over the Pipestone A’s.

“It’s always good, especially for those guys who aren’t always here with Legion or high school stuff going on,” Marshall manager Ryan Schwagel said. “It’s a chance to play with us and everybody got in today. It’s just a good atmosphere for the team to get into.”

Chase Douglas took matters into his own hands to open the game’s scoring. The outfielder lined a leadoff single into right field and showed off the speed even further by stealing second and third to get into scoring position. From there, he got another good jump on a passed ball to score the game’s go-ahead run.

The second inning was more of the same for Marshall when Cody Wichmann drew a leadoff walk. He stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored Marshall’s second run of the day on a passed ball.

Charlie Jacobson started the game on the mound for Marshall, shutting Pipestone out over two innings while limiting the visiting A’s to a walk and a single. Schwagel said Jacobson’s short start was a way for him to get some work in while also keeping him fresh ahead of the weekend, as was the case with all of the team’s arms on the day.

Pipestone got a runner as far as third base in the top of the fifth after a leadoff double and a wild pitch. Yet, Karson Row locked in with consecutive strikeouts to stop Pipestone from capitalizing on the opportunity.

Rowe relieved Jacobson to start the third inning and went on to pitch 3 2/3 innings of relief. He surrendered two runs on three hits during his time on the mound before being relieved with two outs and a man on third in the sixth, also earning the win in the effort.

Eben took over for Rowe in the sixth and didn’t face a batter in the inning. Before he could get through the first at-bat, catcher Talan Plante gunned the ball to third base ahead of Walker Kor to attempt a pickoff. With no chance to make it back to third ahead of the throw, Kor tried to turn back to home but Plante received the ball and applied the tag on the base paths to catch him on the rundown.

Eben went on to pitch 2 1/3 frames of relief, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out two batters in the scoreless outing. Mitch Bouwman then came in to close out the win in the ninth, striking out each of the three batters he faced.

Marshall was consistent at the plate all day long. In addition to their seven hits, they recorded 13 walks at the dish.

“That’s just our team in general this year. We’ve been hitting pretty well, just getting our pitches here in a non-league game, get your hacks in and that’s all we were focused on doing tonight,” Schwagel said.

Zach Olsen walked and Coby Brownlee singled to put runners on the corners with one out in the fourth. A line-out to third put two away but a failed pickoff attempt allowed Olsen to score and a Douglas single drove in Brownlee for a 4-0 Marshall lead.

Pipestone first got on the board when Jared Baartman was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning, advanced to third on consecutive Pipestone walks and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jaymes Zollner.

An inning later, Collin Moeller walked and scored on a Kor RBI double to cut the deficit to two runs, 4-2, but that was as close as Pipestone would get on the day.

Marshall then pulled away in the sixth inning. Logan Terfehr started the rally with a leadoff walk and scored on two passed balls and a wild pitch.

Coby Brownlee reached on a dropped third strike and Dillon Loft walked to put two runners on with one out. A line out put two down but Ashton Blomberg came up with an RBI double and Andrew Stelter lined a two-run single into right-center field to make the score 8-2.

Marshall capped off its scoring in the final frame when Loft and Douglas walked and, with two outs, Andrew Cowden hit a two-run single to bring the game to its final score.

Douglas and Terfehr led the A’s with three times successfully reaching base safely on the day.

Marshall improves to 9-2 on the year with the win and will host the Raymond Rockets for their next game on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Starting at $3.95/week.
