MANKATO — The Southwest Minnesota State University track & field teams had a strong day with several high finishes and setting five school records in day two of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships.

On the men’s side, Carl Swedzinski had a big school record and NCAA provisional toss of 57.05m in the hammer throw to finish fourth and earn the Mustangs five team points.

Hunter Smith cleared 4.47m in the pole vault to finish fifth overall and earn the team four points.

In the decathlon, Chaden Carroll finished in eighth place with a school record total 5,619 points to pick up one team points. He earned second places finishes in both the pole vault and high jump.

Tyler Smith set a school record in the prelims of the 400 meters with a time of 48.55 to advance to Saturday’s finals, while Max Schmitt will also compete in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday after crossing the finish line at 55.18 in the prelims.

For the SMSU women’s team, Hannah Koepfinger had a solid 12th place finish with a school record total of 4,249 points.

Rainbow Stands finished seventh in the high jump with a height of 1.60m to earn 1.5 points.

Madison Marco was the top freshman finisher in the 3000-meter steeplechase running a school record 11:32.06 to place eighth overall and earn SMSU one point.

Sierra Clifford ran 58.76 in the 400-meter prelims and will run in Saturday’s final.

The third and final day of the championship begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
