Deutz sets school record as girls track wins home meet

MARSHALL — The Marshall Tigers Track and Field team hosted seven area teams for their home track meet on Monday night. The Girls’ team took first with 188 points, 49.5 points ahead of second place Luverne. The Boys squad finished in second place with 111.5 points, which was 28.5 points behind first place Worthington.

For the third consecutive meet, the Girls 4×800 meter relay began the meet with a first-place finish. The Girls relay team of Katelyn Liebfried, Ally Sample, Anna Kuecker and Taleigha Bigler won the race with a time of 9:39.42. The Marshall Girls relay team consisting of Oakley Schneekloth, Avery Schneekloth, Landry Graven and Madysson Hasert took second with a time of 10:35.65.

In the 100-meter dash Aysia Miles, 14.0 seconds, and Alexi Schneider 14.08, got first and second. Miles also placed third in the 200-meter with a time of 28.89. Schneider took home another top-three finish as part of the third-place 4×200 relay team. Schneider along with her sister Averi, Makayli Burrell and Chioma Onyeaghala ran a time of 1:56.36 to edge out fourth place MACCRAY/RCW. Onyeaghala also had a great day in the long jump as well as she placed first in the event with a jump of 17’7″.

Autumn Deutz won pole vault and broke the school record in the process. Deutz cleared 11.0′ to vault herself to a new school record. After a very good freshman campaign in Pole Vault last season Deutz spent the past off-season training to reach new heights. As a result, Deutz came into the season with high goals, but with the windy weather for the early season meet she wasn’t sure how the day would go.

When asked about the day Deutz said, “I didn’t think that today was the day for a school record because of the wind, but I’m very excited that it worked out. These were the results that I was hoping for later in the season, but getting a personal record this early in the season is super cool and I’m excited for the rest of the year.”

The Marshall girls swept the top three in the 3200 race. Ally Sample took home another first-place finish with a time of 11:35.47. Behind her was Oakley Schneekloth in a time of 13:01.04. Cameen McFarquhar finished in third with a time of 13:17.5.

In addition to the 4×800 relay, Taliegha Bigler took home two more first-place finishes. Bigler ran a 2:26.29 in the 800 to finish 2.26 seconds ahead of second place Jenna Debates from Luverne.

Bigler’s final first-place finish came as the anchor leg of the 4×400 relay. Like in the 4×800 relay the Girls 4×400 relay won the race for the third consecutive meet. The relay team of Peyton Boeck, Katelyn Leibfried, Anna Keucker and Bigler won their race with a time of 4:16.70.

Boeck had two other top-three finishes for her day. She placed second in a very tight 400 meter with a time of 1:04.79. Boeck was less than .48 seconds behind TMB’s Kyli Carter and just .07 seconds ahead of third place Annie Bourne from MACCRAY/RCW. Boeck also finished in second place in the triple jump with a jump of 32’1″.

Brooklyn Purrington had another great day high jumping. The Marshall eighth grader cleared 5’2″to place first ahead of Emma Thein from MACCRAY/RCW.

The Gillingham sisters once again took home top three finishes in the throwing events as Brooke placed first in the discus with a throw of 99’11” and Paige took third place in the shot put with a put of 31’5.5″

On the Boys side, the relay team of Sam Deutz, Mykel Paulsen, Ethan Bly and Josh Leibfried won the 4×800 race for the third consecutive meet with a time of 8:10.51. Marshall Boys also had the second place team as Chase Werner, Landon Marthaler, Jack Gunn and Noah Dahir ran a 9:02.19.

In Boys Pole Vault Austin Dunn placed second for Marshall with a vault of 11’0″. Dunn’s teammate Aidan Schuerman finished just behind him in third place.

Schuerman continued his good season in the hurdle races. He ran a 17.82 in the 110 hurdles to finish in second just behind Tethlouch Gach from Worthington. Later in the meet Schuerman would get his revenge on Gach in the 300 hurdles as he took first place beating his Trojan competitor who finished in second.

The Marshall Boys finished in first and second place in the 3200 as Sam Deutz took first with a time of 10:58.10 and Kohen Holcomb came in second with a time of 10:58.10.

Josh Leibfried won a very competitive 1600 race which featured some of the state’s top distance runners. Leibfried crossed the finish line in 4:30.93 to finish in first place. Luverne’s Owen Janiszeski placed second with a time of 4:34.94 just ahead of Worthington’s Fanuel Wolday who ran a 4:35.87 and Marshall’s Kohen Holcomb who ran a 4:43.83.

Leibfried was not done with first place finishes for the day after the 4×800 and 1600 as he closed out his day running the third leg of the 4×400 relay team which also got first place. The relay team consisting of Ethan Bly, Mickey Hess, Leibfried and Alex Franson won the race with a time 3:36.95. The win marked the third consecutive meet that the Marshall 4×400 relay team won their race.

Marshall will compete again next Monday in St. Peter
