Five-run fourth puts Beavers past Mustangs

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. — A five-run fourth inning from the Minot State baseball team was too much for the Southwest Minnesota State baseball team to overcome on Friday as the Mustangs’ four-game winning streak came to an end with a 10-5 loss as Klasey Park.

The game was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader played in Marshall on Sunday. Yet, weather forced the game to be relocated to Nebraska and even more inclement weather forced the cancellation of the second game.

The game was tied 1-1 entering the fourth inning when the Beavers broke the game open. Javier Gutierrez was hit by a pitch to start the frame and advanced to second on a Brent Riddle groundout. He scored when Colton Bagshaw singled to right field and Madas singled to left to put runners on the corners with one out.

Bagshaw scored in the next at-bat on a Seugjun Song sacrifice bunt and, with two away, Brian Parry struck out looking but reached base on a past ball to keep the inning alive. Madas scored on a throwing error to first to make the score 4-0.

Still not done rallying, Grant Gabbert singled to left field and advanced to second on a fielding error that allowed Parry to score. Ricky Apodaca walked and Gabbert advanced to third on a wild pitch, putting runners on the corners when Ansen Dulas relieved Ryan Chmielewski. Gabbert stole home to tag on one more run before Dulas ended the inning with a strikeout after five Minot State runs gave the Beavers a 5-1 lead.

Of the six runs Chmielewski allowed over 3 2/3 innings on the mound, just two were earned runs. He allowed six hits and a pair of walks while striking out six batters. The result dropped him to 2-2 on the season.

Dulas pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief for the Mustangs, allowing two earned runs and one unearned on five hits. He struck out eight batters while allowing just one walk.

The Mustangs struck first in the second inning. Max Kalenberg, Brady Petron and Keenan Wenzel each reached base on fielding errors to load the bases for SMSU with two outs. Jake Tauer then drew a walk to drive in the first run of the game but a groundout on the next at-bat limited the damage to a 1-0 Mustang lead.

In the next half-inning, Bagshaw hit a leadoff single and advanced to second and third on a groundout and an error. He scored on a Parry single up the middle to tie the game up at 1-1.

The Beavers continued to threaten to score when Barry and Song advanced to second and third on a failed pickoff attempt and Apodaca walked to load the bases. Still, a groundout ended the top of the third with the game still tied.

Jonah Prokott started the game for Minot State. He pitched 4 â…” innings before being relieved, allowing three earned runs and one unearned on four hits. He also struck out four batters while allowing a walk.

With Prokott exiting before the end of the fifth, Gage Eastlick picked up the win after pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and struck out one batter, improving to 1-1 on the year.

Bode Hayden, Gage Yost and Devin Marton each pitched one inning of relief for Minot. Bode and Marton did not allow a hit or a run, with Bode also striking out a pair of batters, while Yost allowed two hits and one run with a pair of strikeouts.

The Mustangs knocked Prokott out of the game in the fifth inning after Wenzel and Tauer singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. After a Chase McDaniel flyout scored Wenzel, Isaac Nett homered to right-center field to bring the Mustangs within two runs, 6-4.

Owen Latendresse singled and Jaxon Haase reached on a botched fielder’s choice to put runners on first and second with one out. Yet, Eastlick shut down the Mustang rally with a fielder’s choice and a strikeout to end the inning with Minot’s lead still intact.

The Beavers didn’t let the Mustangs feel comfortable in their comeback effort for long. Dulas struck out Song to start the sixth but walked Parry on the next at-bat. Parry advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a Gabbert double.

Dulas got another out with a strikeout before a Mark Ossanna single drove in Gabbert to make the Beavers’ lead 8-4.

Minot brought its lead to five runs in the top of the eighth when Parry reached base on a single and went on to score on a throwing error. The Mustangs came back by loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Yet, a Wenzel run on a wild pitch is all the Mustangs were able to muster.

Shay Endres pitched the top of the ninth for SMSU, allowing one hit and one walk. Yet, Riddle reached on a throwing error and the one hit he allowed — a Madas single to left-center field — increased the Minot State lead to 10-5.

SMSU falls to 10-9 overall on the season and 4-7 in conference with the loss, while Minot improves to 8-13 and 5-6 NSIC. The Mustangs will return to action on Friday and Saturday when they head out on the road for a pair of road doubleheaders against Bemidji. Friday’s games will start at 1:30 p.m. while Saturday’s are scheduled for noon.
