Top-ranked Marshall ends road stretch with sweep of Arrows

PIPESTONE — Avery Fahl recorded a team-high 10 kills on Tuesday night to help the No. 1 Marshall volleyball team to a straight-sets win over Pipestone. Since losing to Class AAAA No. 3 Champlin Park and No. 4 Lakeville South at the Apple Valley Tournament on Sept. 23, the Tigers have now swept five consecutive matches.

The Tigers dominated the first game for a 25-10 win. The Arrows were more competitive in the second game, which Marshall won 25-16, but the Tigers roared back in the third game for a lopsided 25-7 win.

In addition to Fahl, Morgan Bjella also had eight kills for the Tigers while Reese Drake and Brielle Riess had seven apiece. Riess also had five service aces and a block while Drake had one ace and a team-high 10 digs.

Brooke Gillingham was second on the team with seven digs and had 27 set assists while Riess, Kennedy Drake and Jayda Bednarek each had six digs.

Marshall (16-3) will host Windom on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. for its first home match since the Southwest Challenge on Sept. 9.

No. 1 Minneota 3, Lakeview 0

COTTONWOOD — The top-ranked Minneota volleyball team picked up its 12th consecutive win on Tuesday night, taking down Lakeview in straight sets by scores of 25-16, 25-7, 25-14.

Coming off a 3-1 win over No. 5 Canby, the Vikings have looked unstoppable of late. Before that match, Minneota had swept each of its last seven opponents, including No. 2 Mabel-Canton, No. 3 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton and No. 6 Kenyon Wanamingo.

Ella Johnson and Elivia Faris were the only Vikings with five or more kills against Lakeview on Tuesday but they were more than enough. Johnson led the team with 14 kills while Elivia Faris had another 13. They also each had a block on the night while Kenadi Arndt had three.

Libero Lyzah Sussner led the Minneota back row with 16 digs while Grace Hennen and Abby Rolbiecki added another 10 apiece.Sussner was also 9-of-9 with an ace on her serves in the match.

Aubreigh Rausch led the Lakers with five blocks,10 set assists and a pair of aces on the night. Also contributing up at the net, Olivia Hinz had three blocks and Taylor Hinz had seven kills and a team-high 11 digs.

Neveah Hennen’s 27 set assists were a game-high for the Vikings

Minneota (17-2) will return to its home court to host Yellow Medicine East on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. while Lakeview (6-8) go on the road to take on Murray County Central.

No. 3 RTR 3, Edgerton 0

EDGERTON — Abby Carr had another big night for the No. 3 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton volleyball team on Tuesday, finishing the Knights’ match against Edgerton with 15 kills in a 3-0 win.

The Knights won the first game handily, 25-9 before the Flying Dutchmen started to fight back more. Still, RTR took the next two games by scores of 25-15, and 25-17 for their 12th win in their last 13 matches. The lone exception was a 2-0 loss to top-ranked Minneota at the Class A Showcase.

In addition to Carr, Ally Nelson had eight kills for the Knights while Tatum Hess had six.

Defensively, Hess led the way with nine digs while Carr and Avery Schreurs finished with eight and seven respectively.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (17-4) will return to action when it competes at the Jimmy John’s Invitational at Southwest Minnesota State on Friday at 6 p.m. The Knights will open the first day of the tournament against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg and Central Minnesota Christian.

No. 5 Canby 3, YME 0

CANBY — Emily Nelson lead the No. 5 Canby volleyball team in set assists and digs Tuesday night to help the Lancers to a 3-0 win over Yellow Medicine East.

The Sting battled the Lancers in the first game before falling 25-21. From there, Canby continued to pull away with a 25-18 win and a 25-14 clincher.

Following a seven-match win streak, Canby had lost three of its last five matches before Tuesday’s win. Still, those losses came against quality competition — No. 4 Mayer Lutheran, No. 6 Kenyon-Wanamingo and, most recently, No. 1 Minneota. For the Lancers, Tuesday’s win could hopefully function as a launch pad to get back to their dominant, winning ways.

Nelson finished the match with 25 set assists and nine digs. Her six kills were also third on the team behind Karlie Wollum’s 14 and Brooklyn Kindopp’s 12.

Grace Hansen had three solo blocks and a block assist on the night for the Lancers while Wollum and Aliyah Rangaard each had five digs. 

Riley Streich led the Sting with 13 digs and 12 set assists while Narria Leenerts and Ella Cherveny each had 10 digs. 

Leenerts’ three kills were also tied with Abbey Bones for second on the team behind Alana Almich’s four. Almich also had three blocks in the match.

Canby (16-6) will hit the road on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. to take on the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers. 

Yellow Medicine East (2-12) has lost six of its last seven matches and won’t have any easier a matchup on Thursday, taking on the top-ranked Vikings in Minneota.

No. 9 Wabasso 3, Springfield 0

SPRINGFIELD — Heading into Tuesday night’s match, No. 9 Wabasso had won five of its last six matches and swept four of them. Their road battle against Springfield was no different as the Rabbits won in straight sets, 25-9, 25-21, 25-23.

Avery Carlson and Audrey Johnson led the Wabasso back row with 14 digs apiece while Natasha Doubler had another nine. Camryn Irlbeck was also a defensive force at the net with three solo blocks and a block assist.

Sara Carlson set up the Wabasso hitters with 40 set assists and also contributed three aces. Alivia Olson had a team-high 15 kills while Irlbeck and Avery Carlson followed with eight and seven respectively.

Wabasso (15-6) will now head to Renville for a rematch against No. 8 Renville County West on Monday. The teams last met in tournament play in Montevideo on Sept. 9 with the Jaguars taking a 25-20, 25-22 win.

TMB 3, Ortonville 0

TRACY — Alivia Jensen had a whopping 15 service aces on 31 attempts on Tuesday night to help the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton volleyball team pick up a straight-sets win over Ortonville.

The Panthers won the first set 25-16 and only got more dominant from there, taking game 2 25-4 and clinching with a 25-11 third game.

Jensen also was second on the team in kills with six, trailing only Allie Adams’ seven, and had six digs to tie her with Gretchen Lanoue for second on the team.

Hailey Gernentz did a bit of everything for TMB. Her 10 digs and 18 set assists were both team-highs and her four kills tied her with Lanoue for fourth behind Jensen, Adams and Kyli Carter’s five.

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (5-15) will try to build some more momentum with a win in its home matchup against No. 5 Canby on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

WWG 3, MCC 1

WESTBROOK — After a pair of straight-sets losses ended the Westbrook-Walnut Grove volleyball team’s 12-0 start to the season, the Chargers seem to be back on track after taking down Murray County Central on Tuesday night for their third straight win.

The Chargers won the first two games 25-10, 25-19 before the Rebels stormed back for a 25-13 victory in game three. Still, WWG closed out MCC with a 25-21 win in the fourth game.

Abby Wiggins led the Chargers defensively with 18 digs while Macie Christians and Riley Parker had 11 and nine respectively.

Parker also had a team-high nine kills and an assisted block on the night.

Natalie Wahl followed shortly behind her with eight kills and three blocks while Addeson Jenniges had 31 set assists.

Abby Loosbrock and Thea Schneider had seven kills each for the Rebels while Atalie Rosenbrook had another six. Loosbrock also had seven blocks on the night while Schneider and Rosenbrook had two and three respectively.

Emmi Peltola led the Rebel defense with 15 digs while Kate Slettum added another 10. Slettum also had 15 set assists.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove (14-2) will take on Dawson-Boyd and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in the first day of the Jimmy John’s Invitational at Marshall High School on Friday while Murray County Central (7-8) will look to bounce back in a home matchup against Lakeview on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

Dawson-Boyd 3, KMS 2

DAWSON — The Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks got back in the win column on Tuesday night, gutting out a five-set win over Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg.

Dawson-Boyd won the first two games by scores of 25-14, 29-27 before KMS evened the score with a 25-22 and 25-20 win. Still, the Blackjacks prevailed in set five with a 15-11 win.

Reese Johnson had six aces on 24 serves for the Blackjacks while also leading the team with 13 kills. Ayiana Hastad was second with 11 while Addy Tufto and Kadyn Perkins had seven and eight respectively.

Tufto also had a solo block and four assisted blocks while Bailey Bothun had 30 set assists for the Blackjacks.

Dawson-Boyd (5-9) will head to Madison to face off against Lac qui Parle Valley on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

A/E 3, RRC 1

LAMBERTON — Despite winning the first game, the Red Rock Central volleyball team was unable to keep its momentum going against Adrian-Ellsworth on Tuesday night, dropping each of the next three games to the Dragons.

The Falcons battled for a 25-23 first-set win but fell off from there, dropping the next three by scores of 25-11, 25-18 and 25-14.

Addison Irlbeck and Maia Scheffler each had 12 digs for RRC while Callie Highby and Mercedes Meyers led the offense with six and five kills respectively.

Irlbeck also tied Natasha Erickson with a team-high nine set assists while Tia Donkersloot had four total blocks in the match.

Red Rock Central (2-14) will head over to Southwest Minnesota State University to take on West Lutheran and Redwood Valley in the first day of the Jimmy John’s Invitational on Friday.
