MARSHALL — Defense continued to be a staple of the Marshall girls soccer team on Thursday night. The Tigers got their fourth shutout in their last eight games but were unable to get the offense going in a 0-0 tie against New Ulm.
Since Sept. 9, the Tigers have not lost a match. They have had five ties and three wins over the stretch.
While the Tigers were unable to find the back of the net, head coach Jose Losada-Montero said that he believed the team still set themselves up well in the offensive zone. He cited the numerous times that the Tigers put themselves in 1-on-1 situations with the Eagles’ goalkeeper but said they were unlucky with their finishing.
“I think we kept good pressure on the attacking field, so we were recovering the ball pretty well. I think that’s one of the good things we’ve been doing this season,” Losada-Montero said. “Forwards and midfielders are working hard to recover the ball so defenders don’t have to go through that pressure and I think that’s one of the things we’re keeping our goals [against] to zero goals.”
The Tigers and Eagles met once earlier this season with New Ulm winning 1-0 on their home turf on Sept. 5.
The Tigers will now await their seeding for the section tournament starting on Tuesday. Losada-Montero said he doesn’t know what to expect in terms of seeding but said that the focus until the tournament will just be some light tune-ups.
“I’m going to assume that they don’t need any motivation when you play sections. One of the things that I hope they are proud of is that they’ve been undefeated for almost a month now, so I guess it’s at this moment that they started to be mentally self-confident,” Losada-Montero said. “How confident they are about their soccer, what they’ve developed throughout the season, and I don’t think we can teach anything in the next four days, so we have to go with what we have, which I think is a lot. We’ll be competitive.”
