Tigers defeat Windom 9-0 in final home game

MARSHALL — In the Marshall baseball team’s last matchup, a doubleheader against Waseca, starting pitcher Parker Schmitt hit his first career home run. He doubled his career total in the second inning of the Tigers’ game against Windom Tuesday, sending the ball deep to left field in Marshall’s 9-0 win over the Eagles.

“He’s been hitting a lot for us in the second half of the year, but he’s earned it. He’s doing a good job,” Marshall head coach Chace Pollock said of Schmitt’s batting.

Ashton Rowe started on the mound for the Tigers and helped the Marshall defense shine. He pitched a complete-game shutout, holding Windom to four hits and three walks while striking out six batters.

“He was throwing strikes and was letting his defense work,” Pollock said of Rowe. “He was hitting the corners early and… [the defense] played well behind him.”

Marshall scored first in the first inning. Zach Leibfried singled and advanced to second on an error to get in scoring position. From there, Lincoln Graven doubled to center to score Leibfried and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

After Schmitt’s second-inning homer, the Tigers offense was shutout for two innings before coming back with a vengeance in the fifth. Gavin Peterson hit a lead-off single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out. With two outs, Leibfried stepped up to the plate and hit an RBI single.

The Tigers weren’t done, though. Graven singled to advance Leibfried and Andrew Wallen doubled to score both runners and increase the Marshall lead to five runs.

The Tigers’ offensive onslaught continued in the sixth. Ezra Maurice and Parker Schmitt drew walks to start the inning and Rowe was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Tyler Maeyaert singled to score Braden Ust — pinch running for Maurice — and Parker before Leibfried hit a sacrifice ground out to score Braden Myhre, who was courtesy running for Rowe. Maeyaert scored from third on a wild pitch to cap off the Marshall scoring.

Marshall (13-2) carries its eight-game win streak into a road matchup against Mankato East at 5 p.m. and wraps up its regular season against Owatonna at the Milroy Irish Yard on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

“We’re pitching well, we’re playing defense well, we’re hitting the ball, everything seems to be clicking for us,” Pollock said. “It should be a good challenge for us down the road and we’re playing well. I’m excited about this group.
