Records made to fall

Louwagie sets Marshall record for falls, helps Tigers to pair of wins

Dylan Louwagie got his 88th career pin to set the Marshall career falls record and help the Tigers to wins over Minneota and Morris Area-Hancock-Chokio-Alberta Thursday night.

The Tigers defeated MAHACA 48-24 and defeated Minneota 42-28.

“It’s always a big match when we wrestle Minneota,” Marshall head coach Justin Bouwman said. “They’re close, there’s no love lost. I’m friends with most of the coaching staff, heck, my brother’s one of them. We’re out to get the best out of each other and tonight you saw that. It was a great duel.”

Louwagie had to work to get his second pin of the day in the 132-pound class. While he dominated the match, Minneota’s Ezequiel Monzon was able to evade a pin for the first two rounds, forcing a third round. It wasn’t until the final 15 seconds of round three that Louwagie could come away with the full 6 points.

“We’re inexperienced and young. Zeke’s a kid who came back and hasn’t wrestled for three years. Super kid,” Minneota head coach Matt Myrvik said. “He’s battled some adversity and I thought he wrestled really well for two periods. He got worked in the third, but that just comes with a little mat time and getting better and better and continuing to grind.”

His record-setting win against MAHACA, however, was much quicker. He got the pin early in the first round to make a statement early.

“The team gets excited, they knew what was coming,” Marshall head coach Justin Bouwman said of Louwagie’s record. “The old record was on the board in the room, everybody knows where it’s at, and now they have somebody that they can say they trained with that’s at the top of that list.”

While the team gets excited about the pins, they’re still not the primary focus of Louwagie’s approach.

“I wasn’t really thinking about it, it’s not the end goal for me,” Louwagie said of the record-setting pin. “I just go out there and wrestle… Just going out there and doing the tough thing to do for your team and not thinking selfishly.”

The Tigers’ win over Minneota was a back-and-forth affair. Through the first six weight classes, neither team was able to build up a lead of more than 6 points at a time.

Marshall began its match against MAHACA with three straight six-point performances, courtesy of pins from Lincoln Christenson (106) and Landon Marthaler (120) and a win by forfeit for Sam Deutz (113).

Adam Devlaeminck (113), Peyton Gillund (126) and Hudson Scholten (285) all got pins against Marshall for the Vikings, while Zack Fier (152) also came away with a 16-4 major decision.

Aidan Mattison (170) and AJ Haas (195) also won by fall in their matches against MAHACA.

Matt Her (152) came close to a pin in the first few seconds of the match, but he was unable to keep his toe inside the circle, triggering a reset, and was later pinned himself.

“Pinning is really hard. When you’re going out and really trying to pin, it’s harder to pin sometimes,” Bouwman said. “It’s like when you’re trying to force 3-pointers and it doesn’t go in because you’re forcing it. Matty’s a pinner for us, he does the job very well.”

Bouwman added that Aidan Mattison’s ability to get pins over the last three or four weeks has been particularly impressive as well.

Marshall has been on a tear as of late, having locked up the top seed in the conference meet earlier in the week.

The Tigers will next compete in a tournament at Mankato East on Saturday morning.
