MARSHALL – The Marshall girls basketball team dominated Worthington in every facet of the game in their 53-39 home win over the Trojans Friday night.
The Tigers dominated the first half, doubling up the Trojans 33-15. While the Trojans were never a threat to retake the lead, they did outscore the Tigers 24-20 in the second half.
“It’s a tough stretch for us,” Marshall head coach Dan Westby said. “It’s our sixth game in eight days… I think there’s a little bit of fatigue there. That maybe sounds like an excuse, but we played some good teams in that stretch. It’s nice to have that behind us, but we’ve got another tough week coming up with three games next week… we just got to work through it and keep finding ways to get better.”
The Tigers’ offensive production was spread out well in the game. No Tigers finished in double figures, but Randi Wendorff, Lexie Bednarek, and Abby Panka each had 8 points. Another three players had 5 or more.
Out of the team’s leading scorers, Randi Wendorff led the team in efficiency, shooting 3-7 from the field. She also grabbed five rebounds and a steal in the game.
Leah Jones was the lone Marshall player to make more than half of her shots, scoring 6 points on 3-5 shooting. On the defensive end, Jones had a block and a steal.
The Tigers forced the Trojans to commit 21 turnovers on the night, but Bednarek led the charge with five steals.
While Marshall’s 3-point shooting had been consistent as of late, it tailed off in Friday night’s contest. The Tigers shot 5-29 from beyond the arc. Still, their defensive prowess prevented the 3-point struggles from costing them.
Worthington’s shooting was consistent. They shot 33% from 3-point range and 33% from 2-point range. They attempted two free throws in the game, making one of them.
Marshall performed well on the boards in the first half but trailed off in the second. They finished the game trailing Worthington 41-34 in the rebounding battle.
“We maybe gave up a few offensive rebounds in the second half that we maybe shouldn’t have, but rebounding is a priority coming into every game. I think there might have been some fatigue there,” Westby said.
Despite the fatigue, the tough stretch of games for the Tigers wasn’t all negatives, even beyond the wins.
“We played some good teams, and I think we learned a lot about ourselves and what we have to do to compete,” Westby said. “We’ve just got to rest up.”
Marshall (9-5) will wrap up their six-game homestand when they host Windom on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
