Loft advances to quarterfinals at 2AA sectional
GUSTAVUS — The Marshall high school tennis team had six players competing in the 2AA sectional tournament’s south bracket Thursday morning. Regan Loft won each of her first two matches before losing in the quarterfinals to the top singles seed. Taylor DePover and the duo of Taylor Miller and Olivia Penske each ran into buzzsaws, falling to second-seeded matchups from St. Peter. Siri Christensen and Eliza Holmgren lost their first match to Jordan’s fifth-seeded duo.
After receiving a first-round bye, Loft defeated Madalyn Mische of Prior Lake in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. In her third-round matchup against Worthington’s Ivy Jenson, Loft lost the first set 6-4 before battling to a 7-6 win to force a tiebreaker, which she won convincingly by a score of 6-1.
In the quarterfinals, Loft lost 6-1, 6-0 to Sam Williams, a seventh-grade student at Mankato East who has only lost one match this season.
DePover defeated Jordan’s Dyllan Wellhausen in the first round 6-1, 6-3 before losing 6-1, 6-0 to Anika Southworth of St. Peter, the second-seed in the bracket.
Miller and Penske suffered a similar fate when they also lost to the No. 2 seed from St. Peter, Rhyan Holmgren and Madison Kamm. Miller and Penske won a hard-fought first-round matchup against Bryn Donkersloot and Riley Nickel of Worthington, taking the first set 7-6 (9) before moving on with a 6-4 win in the second set.
Christensen and Eliza Holmgren lost in the first round against 4-seed Ameilia Hildebrandt and Macy Weller of St. Peter 6-0, 6-1.
Marshall lost in the first round of the team sectional tournament to Jordan on October 4th.
The losses in the individual sectional tournament mark the end of Marshall’s season. The section 2AA tournament will continue on Tuesday.
